A 20-year-old second-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead in his hostel room on Tuesday night, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.The deceased has been identified as Sohil Rajkumar Sangwan, a second-year Material Science student from Pilani in Rajasthan. He was staying in a hostel on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai.Police said information about the incident was received on the intervening night of July 28 and 29, following which officers rushed to the hostel.According to investigators, preliminary findings indicate that Sangwan died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan with a bedsheet. Police also examined the student's mobile phone and found chats indicating that he had been facing family-related issues and was also going through a difficult phase in a personal relationship, officials said.Investigators are now analysing his mobile phone and other electronic devices to determine whether any additional factors may have contributed to the suspected suicide. An Accidental Death Report has been registered at Powai Police Station under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
