IG, DIGs camping at Kansapuram following clash between caste groups

A huge posse of policemen were deployed in Kansapuram where a father-son duo were attacked with weapons and several vehicles were damaged in a clash between two caste groups on Tuesday night.Senior police officers, led by Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Vijayendra Bidari, Deputy Inspector Generals of Police Abhinav Kumar (Madurai) and N. Manivannan (Ramanathapuram) are camping in the troubled area. Besides, four officers in the rank of Superintendent of Police are also overseeing police picketing.While Ganesapandian and his son were injured in a brutal attack by an armed gang, a few bikes, autorickshaws, a car and roof of two houses were damaged by the other group in a retaliatory attack. The police have arrested two persons — R. Rakesh and M. Prakash — in connection with the attack on the two persons. With this, the total number of persons arrested has increased to five, the police said.The group attacked Ganesapandian for having scolded the organisers of a marriage procession for beating drums and brusting crackers while passing through his street on August 15.Meanwhile, both the caste groups agreed to maintain peace without further escalating the situation. A resolution to this effect was passed at a peace meeting organised at the Srivilliputtur Taluk Office. The peace meeting, chaired by Sivakasi Sub-Collector Mohammed Irfan, was attended by representatives from both sides and officials from Police and Revenue Departments.The officials agreed to take efforts to provide government support and medical treatment to the injured persons.
