If Aviation Were A Country, It Would Rank As The World's 4th Largest Economy

As a result, aviation looks largely as Airbus predicted it would 26 years ago. Much of this consistent growth has emerged from the rise of the middle and upper classes worldwide. Airbus' data suggests there has been a 1.9 billion growth in the size of this economic class from 2005 to 2025. An Industry That Recovers Better Than Any Country The aviation sector's ability to recover rapidly is most clearly shown by examining the Middle East. It ground to a near halt in the region in late February when the United States and Israel went to war with Iran and its regional allies. There have been several negative consequences for aviation sparked by this war. The most obvious was that far fewer commercial flights could take place as much of the region became an active warzone. If, on January 1, 2026, daily passenger movements are taken as 100%, the number dropped to a little above 25% at the start of March. Daily passenger movements have been recovering ever since, approaching 70% of January 1's movements by the end of June. Airbus predicts further recovery is to come. Limited aircraft movements are only one of the impacts of the Iran Crisis on aviation. Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz during the events. According to the BBC, roughly 20 million barrels (3.18 billion liters) of oil and oil products passed through this waterway each day. The sudden break in this supply caused oil prices worldwide to shoot upwards and fuel shortages. Europe was predicted to have just six weeks of fuel stocks remaining. Aviation fuel prices rose as a result. Suddenly, every airline in the world had to find a way to pay far higher costs. For example, United Airlines spent an extra $2.3 billion on fuel in Q2, an 84% increase. Many airlines responded by cutting services from their least lucrative routes. The recovery from the worst point of the crisis has been astonishing, allowing the global aviation sector to still appear strong this year. Despite the ongoing problems in the Middle East, home to some of the world's most premium airlines, Airbus still thinks the sector will grow 2.1% in the 2026 financial year vs 2025. Airbus Says That Aviation's Benefits Aren't Purely Economic Credit: Shutterstock The benefits that a business sector provides for humanity are not solely measured by its economic output. Without an understanding of business' social impact, we'd regard some of the world's most important industries as meaningless if they underperform economically. Airbus points to India, where train travel has historically been dominant. A journey on the rails from Bengaluru in the south to Delhi in the north takes a grueling 35 hours. Meanwhile, plane travel cuts the journey time to a few hours. The result has been a growth in the Indian domestic airline passenger base from 20.1 million in 2005 to almost 170 million in 2025. Airbus points to the increasing globalization of our world, with diasporas forming and growing to enormous sizes. This trend stimulates demand for aviation as more people have to fly to visit friends and family back home. Between 2000 and 2024, migration has impacted every region on earth. For example, in 2000, there were 40.7 million international migrants in North America, which grew to 61.5 million by 2024. The change has been most pronounced proportionally in the Middle East. The region had just 16 million international migrants in 2000. Enormous economic growth and other factors led there to be 42.9 million international migrants in the Middle East by 2024. Airbus points towards a growing need and desire to travel by air, which is just beginning to come into view. The table above shows the nations and regions that Airbus predicts will have the most pronounced changes in yearly trips per capita over the next two decades. Even the current world leader in annual trips per capita, the USA, will show growth. Americans took 2.1 trips a year in 2025, which will increase to 2.9 by 2045. The Death Of Hub-And-Spoke Travel Coincides With Urbanization Trends Credit: Shutterstock Aviation's growth has not been a happy accident arising from trends over which airline and manufacturer executives have little control. Rather, technological developments and strategic decisions have aligned with these trends. That has led the sector to accurately meet its customers' demands. One example is the death of the hub-and-spoke model, whereby airlines previously operated quadjets like the Boeing 747 between hubs. Passengers could then connect to narrowbody aircraft to get to their final destination. Now, carriers make use of ultra-efficient and long-range twinjets, such as the Airbus A350, to connect customers directly to their final destination on a point-to-point basis. The growth of point-to-point comes at a time when Airbus predicts urbanization will shift from megacities to smaller cities. From 2025 to 2045, there will be four more megacities, compared with 18 more large cities and 606 more medium and small cities. In line with this trend, there were 17,800 city pairs in 2005, compared with 28,000 in 2025. 78% of these new routes involved small cities, and 55% of the total city pairs were new routes compared with 2025. The Aircraft Needed To Match This Trend Credit: Shutterstock Connecting new cities requires aircraft with the efficiency, range, and versatility to make new trips economically viable. Airbus points to the Airbus A220 as its contribution to narrowbody aviation in this area. It claims that 400 new routes in North America, Europe and Africa have been made possible by the jet, with hopes for similar results in the Asia-Pacific region. Airbus also believes that the A220 has much greater potential to open up new routes than has currently been achieved. The manufacturer claims that there are over 2,200 unserved routes that could be suited to the A220. This includes 800 city pairs in the Americas, 600 in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and 800 in Asia (with some overlap between these central and eastern regions). One hope for Airbus to have airlines use more of the A220's potential could be a major upgrade planned for 2027. Rather than launching a new variant, the manufacturer will outfit new A220 deliveries with its Airspace interior. The change will align the A220's cabin experience with the Airbus A330neo, A320neo, and A350. Passengers will enjoy extra-large overhead lockers, giving them a 15% additional baggage capacity, while airlines will benefit from a 20% weight saving. The jets will also have 16-million-color LED lighting. That will allow airlines to tailor their A220s more closely to their brand.
