The iconic bars previously landed the retail giant in High Court circa 1997, when Puffin was accused of being a little too “familiar” to another well know confectionary item. Puffin bars returned to shelves on August 17, meaning shoppers can already tuck into the beloved biscuits. The chocolatey treats will set you back just £1 for a packet of 8. Its arrival follows new research by Asda highlighting how Brits are swapping big-named brands for supermarkets own products, with half (50%) now rating supermarket own-brand items as a genuine rival. More than eight in ten Brits (84%) are also now more open to trying own-brand versions of their favourite foodie picks than they were five years ago, and 88% say hunting down an own-brand item that is just as tasty as the branded original is a “proper big win”. While own-brand versions are cheaper than branded items, for shoppers, it’s not just about saving some pennies. Most read in Money 85% say discovering a great own-brand alternative is satisfying, while three in ten (30%) say the ultimate prize is finding an own-brand item that is tastier than the branded original. Puffin arrives on shelves at the ideal times, as biscuits are leading the way in own-brand swaps. Almost half of Brits (49%) have permanently switched to own-brand biscuits, more than any other food category. An Asda spokesperson said: “Customers are proud of finding a brilliant own-brand swap, especially when it saves them money and still tastes great. “And with biscuits topping the table for the products Brits are permanetly swapping, there couldn’t be a better time to bring Puffin back, packed with personality and ready to take on the biscuit aisle.” Comment now
