The shop was expected to shutter on Sunday, August 30, but closed its doors for the final time on Saturday 29 after high footfall meant the branch sold out of stock more quickly than expected. It was one of many locations to cease operations over the weekend, with branches in Ashford, Portsmouth, Braintree, York, Dalton Park, Castleford and Cheshire Oaks also closing down. Huge sales were launched ahead of the closures, with pottery items available for as little as £2 across stores. The closures marked the end of more than 200 years of the firm’s physical trading presence in the UK. Denby fell into administration earlier this year, citing “enormous financial challenges” over the last three years owing to “escalating” employment costs and a lack of product demand. A petition was launched in an attempt to save the brand which would include ceramics as an eligible industry for a business support scheme. It received over 11,000 signatures but was unable to rescue the pottery firm. Most read in Money Now, the iconic homeware brand will “live on” under new ownership. Tony Wright, one of the joint administrators from FRP Advisory appointed to the Denby group, said that while it was a “sad moment” to see the Pottery Village close, “the Denby brand itself will continue under new ownership, ensuring its legacy lives on”. The new owner has not yet been announced, and FRP has not disclosed what assets were purchased in the deal. Comment now
