(Photo: AP)India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando have been fined 25 per cent of their match fees and handed one demerit point each for their physical altercation during the second Test in Colombo. The incident took place on the opening day of the Test after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal in the 17th over of India's innings. The two players exchanged words before the confrontation escalated, with their heads making contact. Both Jaiswal and Fernando were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The article relates to inappropriate physical contact with a player, support staff member, umpire, match referee or any other person during an international match.JAISWAL ASITHA ADMIT OFFENCEThe ICC confirmed that both players admitted the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. As a result, there was no need for a formal hearing. Jaiswal and Fernando were each fined 25 per cent of their match fees and received one demerit point.Neither player had committed an offence in the preceding 24 months, meaning this was the first disciplinary action against both during that period. The altercation came after Fernando got Jaiswal out during an intense passage of play. The India opener walked towards the Sri Lankan pacer after his dismissal, with the two exchanging words.Fernando then moved his head towards Jaiswal, who responded by leaning in, resulting in their heads making contact. The incident was immediately noticed by the players around them, with members of the Sri Lankan team moving in to separate the two.The sanctions come as India and Sri Lanka remain locked in a closely fought second Test in Colombo.India reached 475/8 on Day 2 before rain interrupted play, with Dhruv Jurel unbeaten on 95 and five runs away from his second Test century.- EndsPublished By: Debodinna ChakrabortyPublished On: Aug 24, 2026 15:03 IST
