Builders can blanket an entire house with physical sensors for a fraction of a Thread deployment budget. These can be costly compared to a single Zigbee USB coordinator. Alongside this, you might face sub-network partitioning and latency issues too when border routers from competing vendors fail to share Thread credentials correctly. Instead of a unified mesh, your home fragments into isolated Thread sub-networks, leading to routing loops, high latency, and dropped commands when a border router reboots. Use all the features you pay for Rather than just the basics You might lose access to some of your devices' best features when you're using Matter over Thread too. This is because, to ensure a device behaves identically whether it's controlled by Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa, Matter standardizes device profiles down to basic functions. Advanced features can often be hidden or unsupported by primary controller apps. This isn't the case for every single device under Matter over Thread, but it is the case for some. This is vastly different to the granular control offered by open software stacks like Zigbee, 2MQTT, or ZHA. Zigbee exposes raw ZCL attributes directly to a home assistant, meaning you get deep control of all your devices and their features. This can give you practical advantages, like adjusting PIR motion sensor retrigger intervals down to two seconds to save you power in the long run. You can also use this to set power-on state behavior on smart plugs, calibrate thermal offsets on TRVs, and update device firmware locally without ever downloading a manufacturer's proprietary smartphone app. Matter isn't all bad But a hybrid set-up is likely the best option Realistically, Matter is a positive evolution for mainstream consumer tech when replacing legacy cloud-polling Wi-Fi devices. For the smart home enthusiast who values total local control, budget-friendly hardware, scaling, and rock-solid network stability, abandoning Zigbee might not be the best point of call. Instead, you might be better off embracing a hybrid philosophy: you can let Matter over Thread handle high-bandwidth IP devices like smart TVs or media streamers, but then keep your core sensor scaffolding, local switches, and lighting routines anchored to a cheap, sovereign, and battle-tested Zigbee mesh.
