Karren Brady gives you career advice Q) I was made redundant six months ago and am really struggling to find another job. I’m in my late-40s and have worked as an office administrator and then office manager for decades, but it seems like there are hundreds of applicants for any roles that come up, and I’ve only had one interview in the last two months. At this point I just need to earn some money – but I have even been rejected without an interview for a role working in a supermarket. The whole situation feels hopeless and I just don’t know where to go from here. Do you have any suggestions? Kelly A) Six months of job searching can take a real toll on your confidence, especially when you’ve spent years building experience in your field and a strong track record. However, I would be very careful not to interpret a lack of interviews as a reflection of your value. The job market is incredibly competitive at the moment, and many capable people are finding themselves in a similar position. Rather than applying for every single vacancy that comes up, focus on refining your approach. Make sure your CV highlights your achievements rather than simply listing responsibilities, tailor applications wherever possible, and reconnect with former colleagues and professional contacts who may know of opportunities. It’s also worth remembering that office managers develop a wide range of transferable skills, from organisation and communication to managing operations and problem solving. Most importantly, keep going. Job hunting can feel deeply personal, but often it isn’t. You’re only one application, one conversation or one opportunity away from turning things around. Best of luck.
