The bitter bride explained that she and her husband had originally hoped to freeze the cake topper so they could enjoy it on their one year anniversary. “It was sentimental and meaningful, and the cake was honestly the best tasting wedding cake I’ve ever had. We were really looking forward to that tradition,” she recalled. However, when her mother went to collect the cake at the end of the celebrations, she was devastated to discover that it had disappeared into thin air. The bride was adamant that it had neither “disappeared” or been “misplaced”, but that it had been snatched by someone. Confused and upset, the newlyweds spent nearly 30 years wondering what had happened to their cake. “For almost three decades we wondered who would do something like that. It wasn’t a leftover slice. It was clearly boxed and meant for us,” she lamented. Most read in Fabulous Amid their confusion, the groom was certain that it was the wedding pastor who had pinched the delicious cake. Eleven months later, the couple ran into the pastor and revealed the happy news that they were expecting their first child. But the bride claimed she got more than she bargained for during the announcement. She wrote: “He looked at me and said he figured I was pregnant at the wedding. I remember thinking, wow, I am not an elephant, dude. Etiquette expert's advice for wedding guests - what not to do ETIQUETTE expert Jo Hayes shares her ‘don’ts’ for wedding guests: 1. Don’t request a plus one A wedding is a time of celebration with close friends and family, with a guest list carefully curated by the bride and groom. For many couples, this task can often take a long time to perfect, picking and choosing important people that they want to share their special day with. So it’s only courteous to respect this decision, and don’t pressure them to allow you to bring a plus one if they haven’t been invited, or if they’ve already said no. 2. Don’t steal the spotlight or make the day about yourself in any way This means no wedding proposals, baby news announcements, don’t make speeches unless you’ve been asked to, don’t start discussing family dramas, and don’t turn up in an outfit fit for the club. While there may be some couples who don’t mind this, it’s still important to be respectful about what big news to share at someone else’s big celebration. 3. Do not arrive at the ceremony or reception drunk Jo says, “I remember one wedding I attended where half the guests (not including myself) got wasted and the bride and groom, too. The end of the ceremony descended into a messy, loud, and unpleasant experience.” Keeping away from consuming too much alcohol will help avoid a plethora of other unpleasant things, and keep the wedding the light and joy-filled celebration that it’s set out to be. On top of that, don’t start an argument. No one wants their wedding day ruined by ‘Uncle Ed and Cousin Tom’ getting into a barney over politics. 4. Don’t pressure or criticise the couple over their decisions Some bridal parties can decide against inviting children to their wedding, to serve a buffet meal that may not be to everyone’s taste, or to have the DJ not accept music suggestions. It’s important to remember that the day is about the soon-to-be-weds, rather than the guests attending the wedding. The couple will have made choices based on what they want on their special day, so it’s good to respect their decisions. Shared in collaboration with Gingham & Heels “That comment stuck with us, and my husband always joked that the pastor probably took the cake topper too.” But it wasn’t until 28 years later that they discovered the true culprit. The woman revealed that her aunt had recently phoned her to inform her it was her son – the woman’s cousin – who had nabbed the cake straight from the fridge. “He was in his mid-thirties at the time,” the frustrated bride said. “Not a kid. Not someone who didn’t know better. He knew exactly what it was and exactly who it belonged to. He just decided he wanted it later as a snack.” Despite the frustrating realisation that it was her very own cousin behind the mystery cake thief, the woman admitted she was at least relieved the mystery was solved. “I’m glad the mystery is solved, but I’m furious that the answer is my own cousin,” she said. “I’m glad the mystery is solved, but I’m furious that the answer is my own cousin. He would absolutely deny it now and get mad at me for bringing it up, which somehow makes it even more irritating.” Comment now
