I used Plex and Jellyfin for a month, and there's one clear winner for true hardware ownership

After finally investing in a high-capacity NAS, I decided it was time to start creating my own private streaming platform by ripping my hundreds of Blu-rays. There were two obvious contenders dominating the home lab space. Plex is a polished commercial powerhouse with slick cross-platform client apps, built-in remote streaming relays, and mainstream user adoption. Jellyfin is a community-driven, 100% free and open-source fork of MB that strips away paywalls, telemetry, and corporate cloud dependencies. While I tried both out, I realized that the cloud tether Plex requires means that during an internet outage, your local server becomes inaccessible even on your own LAN without preconfigured subnet workarounds. Plex is a commercial media portal masquerading as a self-hosted server, whereas Jellyfin is a true private infrastructure when measured by hardware control, local-first offline resilience, and free hardware transcoding. Jellyfin is essentially the undisputed winner for builders who insist on genuine hardware ownership. Online servers are a different ballgame You don't need online authentication with Jellyfin When it comes to authentication and offline servers, there's a stark contrast between the process for Plex and Jellyfin. Plex features centralized cloud authentication. This means that client apps authenticate with Plex's remote cloud infrastructure, known as plex.tv, rather than directly with your local server's IP address. This means if there's ever a glitch with the Plex authentication servers, or if your ISP line drops momentarily, streaming to your living room Apple TV, Roku, or iPad fails unless you have manually configured explicit local subnet IP bypasses beforehand. On the other hand, Jellyfin gives you 100% sovereign local authentication. Jellyfin's user accounts, credentials, and authentication logic live entirely inside your local SQLite/Postgre-SQL database. Your server and client apps communicate directly over your local LAN with zero outbound handshakes, making it completely immune to any internet blackouts or remote server outages. Don't forget about the paywalls Yet another monthly subscription The two services also differ in their hardware paywalls. For example, if you want to take advantage of GPU transcoding and hardware acceleration, then you have to pay with Plex. To unlock GPU-accelerated hardware transcoding like Intel Quick Sync, NVIDIA and NVENC, or AMD AMF, as well as HDR tone mapping in Plex, users must pay for a Plex pass. While it's not too expensive at just $4.99 a month, it still defeats the whole point of setting up your own private media server to avoid paying subscription fees to other streaming services. Without paying this fee, your server is forced to use software CPU transcoding, which chokes your processor and causes 4K buffer freezes. In contrast, Jellyfin offers you unrestricted silicon access, giving you 100% free unrestricted hardware acceleration straight out of the box. There's native support for Intel QSV, including low-power VPP pipelines. You also get flawless on-the-fly HDR-to-SDR tone mapping available to every user for free. You never have to worry about paying a monthly membership or a lifetime access license fee. There are some trade-offs Jellyfin isn't flawless It is worth noting that, despite Jellyfin offering these benefits, there are several trade-offs. Of course, there's a reason why so many users opt for Plex instead. One of the first major benefits is Plex's remote streaming setup. You get seamless one-click remote streaming via UPnP and Plex Relay, but note that the relay caps bandwidth at 1-2Mbps. In contrast, Jellyfin requires proper networking fundamentals, like pairing Jellyfin with a Tailscale mesh VPN, Cloudflare tunnel, or reverse proxy. Though it does mean you get a win in terms of privacy, this can be finicky and frustrating to set up. There's also a difference in the app UI. Plex's Apple TV and LG webOS apps are seemingly more polished out of the box for non-technical family members. When using them, it feels like using any other streaming application, making it so much easier for your whole family to use. Jellyfin's client out of the box is fantastic, but there is a growing community of Jellyfin clients that rival commercial front ends if you are willing to adopt them. Self-hosting shouldn't cost you If you're looking to reclaim the self with self-hosting, it might be time to switch to Jellyfin. While Plex has built an incredible platform over time, investor pressure has transformed it from a self-hosted media server into a seemingly commercial streaming portal that treats your local storage as a secondary feature. Instead of paying a subscription fee to access your own GPU and local files, spin up a Jellyfin container this weekend, point it to your media share, and you might realize it's time to make a switch.
