I tried the wild 0mm bezel Android phone that beat Apple to the punch

Every generation, phone makers find another millimeter to shave off, whether through clever display packaging, curved glass, or squeezing more hardware into less space. Apple, too, is reportedly on track to launch a zero-bezel device next year. But here at IFA 2026, TECNO wants to take that race to the very end with its new 0mm bezelless Android smartphone.It's like a smartphone equivalent of an infinity pool.Let’s be clear, this is very much a concept device rather than a production-ready phone, but the effect is surprisingly convincing. TECNO has managed to (almost) eliminate the visible black border between the 6.7-inch 144Hz display and the phone’s frame entirely. The concept uses a dual-layer cover glass, with the lower layer extending underneath the frame, while the display is inserted from the rear rather than the front. A custom adhesive then secures the extended glass to the frame. The result is that the normally hidden inactive area and assembly space can sit underneath the frame instead of creating a visible black border.While the display feels like it makes up most of the phone’s face, it doesn’t suddenly give you a dramatically more usable screen, but it removes one of those little visual interruptions we’ve all become accustomed to.The rest of the phone is more predictable, with some details I liked and others that left me less impressed.Adamya Sharma / Android AuthorityFor one, the TECNO concept is surprisingly light and fairly thin, despite packing a sizeable 6,000mAh battery, at least according to the hardware configuration TECNO shared with me at their IFA ShowStoppers booth.The company told me the internal hardware is based on an existing TECNO phone, with a Dimensity 7300e powering the package. Those specifications aren’t really the point here, though. TECNO is using them to demonstrate the 0mm display concept, not to win any performance awards.Adamya Sharma / Android AuthorityThen there’s the back. The unit I used had a subtle 3D flower pattern etched into the white rear panel. It catches the light as you move the phone around without becoming overly flashy, and honestly, whether you like it or not is a very personal choice.There are also some software touches designed around TECNO’s broader AI ambitions, including a configurable physical One-Tap Button on a device otherwise running Android 16. But once again, those features feel secondary to the attention-grabbing screen.Adamya Sharma / Android AuthorityThis isn’t the first time TECNO has used a concept phone to show off technology that sounds a little crazy. The company has previously demonstrated a rollable concept, a tri-fold, and most recently an ultra-thin modular phone at MWC 2026.A 0mm bezel doesn't fundamentally change what your smartphone screen can do.The new bezelless concept feels like a different kind of ambition, though, and the company is tackling something we’ve simply accepted as part of phone design for years.
