I thought I wanted the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The cheaper Fold 8 changed my mind

It starts at $2,100 in the US, compared with $1,900 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Why should I settle for less when I was already spending this much? The Ultra also gets the kind of upgrades I'd normally associate with the "best" version of a phone: more screen, more camera hardware, more battery, and more storage, including a 1TB option. So my instinct was simple: if I were going to buy a Galaxy Z Fold 8, I'd buy the Ultra. But the more I considered the Z Fold 8, the less clear the choice became. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 makes more sense as an actual phone I don't need my foldable to be a mini laptop What changed my mind was that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 seems to make a little more sense as a phone. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 weighs 201 grams, making it the lightest Z Fold yet and 14 grams lighter than the 215-gram Fold 8 Ultra. It's also shorter and wider when folded, rather than using the Ultra's taller, narrower shape. A foldable still spends a lot of its life folded. I'm carrying a phone in my pocket, pulling it out to check a message, browse something, look at a map, or do whatever task I need to do. And the Z Fold 8's proportions seem better suited to that everyday role. The Ultra is still the more ambitious device. It's thinner when unfolded, has the larger outer and inner displays, and packs the higher-end camera system and larger battery. However, I don't need my device to be the biggest possible foldable. I need a phone I wouldn't mind carrying around all day. That's why the Galaxy Z Fold 8 started making more sense. The Fold 8's screen might actually suit me better Its wider screen caught my attention The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has the bigger screen, so I initially assumed it would be the obvious winner here. Its 8-inch inner display sounds like exactly what I'd want from a foldable. But then I started thinking about what I'd do with all that screen space. I'm not looking for a tiny laptop. I'd mostly want a foldable for reading, browsing, watching videos, scrolling through social media, and occasionally playing games. And the Z Fold 8's 7.6-inch inner display has a wider 4:3 aspect ratio that seems better suited to those kinds of activities. That's something my colleague Andy Boxall mentioned after using both phones. In his review, he found the Galaxy Z Fold 8 more appealing to use, pointing to its friendlier size and design. More importantly, he thought Samsung's entertainment-focused approach to the Fold 8 was more relevant than the Ultra's emphasis on productivity and multitasking. That observation stuck with me because the Ultra's bigger screen is beneficial only if I need a bigger workspace. If I'm mostly opening the phone to consume content, the Z Fold 8's wider shape may be the more useful choice. The $200 question is harder than I expected The Ultra has more, but do I need it? The Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,900, while the Z Fold 8 Ultra adds another $200. And the Ultra gives you more for that money. It has a larger 8-inch inner display, a 5,000mAh battery instead of the Fold 8's 4,800mAh cell, and a considerably more ambitious camera setup, including a 200MP main camera and a dedicated 3x telephoto. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 has a 50MP main camera but no dedicated telephoto. The spec sheet might make most think, "What's another $200?" But I think the more useful question is what those upgrades would change for me. The bigger battery is nice, but that's not a reason I'd automatically choose one phone over another. An extra 200mAh sounds reassuring, but battery life depends on more than capacity. The cameras are probably the Ultra's strongest argument. If I cared a lot about zoom photography, the dedicated telephoto would be a meaningful upgrade. And the 200MP main camera gives the Ultra a clear hardware advantage. But that's also where I have to be honest with myself: Would I use those camera capabilities enough to make them worth another $200? The Galaxy Z Fold 8 changed my mind I initially assumed I'd want the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. But the Z Fold 8 makes more sense for me since it's lighter and more compact. Its wider design and 4:3 inner display seem better suited to how I'd use a foldable. That doesn't mean the Ultra isn't worth the extra $200. If you want the biggest possible display, the more advanced camera hardware, and a foldable built more around productivity and power-user features, the Ultra is probably worth the premium. But for me, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the one I'd pick since it makes the most sense as a phone I'd want to carry and use every day.
