I tested booze-free wines, beers and cocktails that could give your health a boost on alcohol-free days

AS the August bank holiday looms, one in three of us are likely to drink more booze than on an ordinary weekend. But cutting out alcohol can help with sleep, body weight, skin and mental health. Incorporating some booze-free days into your weekly routine can provide your body with essential time to repair. Today, I look at alcohol-free wines, beers and cocktails . . . Sign up for the Health newsletter Thank you! WINE Moderato is France’s leading alcohol-free wine MODERATO is France’s leading alcohol-free wine. It is made by traditional methods, before alcohol is removed so the finished product contains less than 0.5 per cent by volume. MORE ON ALCOHOL-FREE DRINS Moderato makes a red, rosé, sparkling and white – the Moderato Cuvee Revolutionnaire Colombard, which I had a chance to sample and very much enjoyed. It’s hard to find an alcohol-free white wine without a hint of Shloer about it but this wasn’t fruity pop, it had a decent amount of acidity – and seven times fewer calories than its alcoholic counterpart. A bottle of Moderato costs from £12.75 at majestic.co.uk. BEER Mash Gang starts at just 56 calories per can Credit: Unknown SOMETIMES there’s nothing better than a nice cool beer in the sunshine. Most read in Health But if you’re looking after your health, opting for one with zero alcohol can make a big difference. Your general can of IPA contains about 200 calories but alcohol-free beers from a company called Mash Gang can start at just 56 calories per can. I tried their Journey Juice. which is a bit bolder and fruitier than your traditional alcohol-free lager. It had a lovely fizz about it, tasting like a sort of grown-up Lilt. And it packs just 59 calories. Swap a few of those over your bank holiday and you could make a real difference to your health – not to mention your waistline. From £2.25 a can, see mashgang.com. COCKTAIL Bel Nada is 72 calories per 100ml while the Aperol comes in at 220 BEL NADA are alcohol-free aperitifs and there are three fabulous offerings in the range. There’s gin alternative Le Botanique, and rum swap L’Epice, but the one I loved is called L’Aperitivo which is described as a vibrant “floral spritz alternative with grapefruit, rosé, lavender, and rosemary”. It reminded me of Aperol, and with a bit of prosecco it tasted amazing. If I wanted to go totally dry, I could have obviously used just the alcohol-free variety, but even with using half alcohol-free I was saving calories and being a bit healthier. And there’s a big difference. The Bel Nada is 72 calories per 100ml while the Aperol comes in at 220. A great swap. A 700ml bottle is £29 from belnada.co.uk. Comment now
