I started suffering from alopecia 11 years ago, when I was 75. It began with bald patches, and the extraordinary thing was that I never knew where the next patch was going to appear. The hair would sometimes grow back where it had been, but it would still be thin and sparse. My hairdresser Karen was wonderful and she would do her best with about two strands of hair. She’d say, ‘Oh Jane, the bald patch has moved; it’s gone from here to here.’ It was almost magic in a way, but it was horrible. You’d get used to one patch and then suddenly it was somewhere else. People don’t understand what this condition does to you. I would go to the GP and be told, ‘Oh Jane, it’ll grow back. It’ll be alright’. But when you’re going through it, you’re thinking: 'How do you know? You haven’t got a crystal ball.' I’d recently undergone back surgery, and the doctor suggested perhaps that was connected to it. But there wasn’t really any treatment or explanation. It was just, ‘It’ll come back.’ I started looking everywhere for something that might help. I went to places like Holland & Barrett and looked at all the shelves for things that said 'hair repair,' 'hair volume' and so on. I bought shampoos, supplements, all sorts. Nothing worked. I paid for private appointments with trichologists and dermatologists – one consultation followed by another, for £150, then £300. They would take photos and ask me to come back for another appointment, but I didn’t feel like they were offering a solution. Jane Ferguson started suffering from alopecia 11 years ago, when she was 75. It began with bald patches, and she soon resorted to wearing hats or trying to hide her hair Jane after 12 months of using the Glowwa hair supplement. She has now been taking the supplement for five-and-a-half years and still uses it every dayI spent thousands of pounds over the course of five years, desperate to find answers. I couldn’t afford to keep paying for endless expensive appointments; I was just stuck trying treatments that were no help. I’d wear hats or attempt to hide my hair. I’d sit at the back of a function so my hair wasn’t on display. I’d wash it every day to try to give it a bit of volume, but it was getting thinner and thinner. It got to the point where I didn’t want to go out, which is totally unlike me.Then Karen told me she’d been to a hair show and met a woman called Suzanne Cooper, the founder of haircare brand Glowwa, who had problems with thinning hair herself due to stress. She told Karen that she was developing a hair supplement and asked if she knew anybody who would trial it. At that point, to be quite honest, I would have taken arsenic. So when Suzanne offered me a three-month trial, I said 'Absolutely.' I started taking two tablets a day. For the first two months, nothing happened. But I’d promised I’d do the full three-month trial, so I kept going. Then, into the third month, I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes. I started getting these little spiky bits of hair on the bald patches. From then on, my hair continued to grow, and it was stronger and healthier than it had ever been. Eventually, my entire head was transformed. The joy of knowing that I wasn’t going to be totally bald, and that I might not have to get the wig I’d started to think about buying, was life-changing. I’ve now been using the supplement for five-and-a-half years and still take it every day – it costs just £36.99 for 60 capsules. It’s not just good for my hair. I think it has improved my cognitive skills, too, as I can do a bit more of the crossword. However, perhaps that’s because I’ve got my mental real-estate back, as I’m not constantly panicking about going bald. I know there are lots of people out there suffering. And there are plenty of people my age who are being bombarded with adverts for products promising thicker hair. I’ve been through the desperation of clicking on those ads and hunting through the shelves, thinking, 'Can this help me?' I don’t want anybody to feel embarrassed about it. I want people to talk about it. I want people to know that there are others who understand. Because I know what it’s like to feel completely out of control. And I know what it feels like when, suddenly, extraordinarily, you start to get your hair back.Do hair supplements really work? By trichologist Sofia Baig Suzanne Cooper, the founder of haircare brand Glowwa, had problems with thinning hair herself due to stressGlowwa Hair Food is a broad nutritional formulation containing several nutrients involved in normal hair follicle function: biotin, zinc, vitamin B12 and folate. It also features vitamin C, which supports collagen production and helps with iron absorption. The B vitamins support energy metabolism, while L-lysine and rice protein provide amino acids that contribute to protein synthesis and keratin formation. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) contains sulphur, although evidence that MSM specifically stimulates hair regrowth is limited. Overall, these ingredients can support the nutritional environment required for healthy hair, particularly where dietary intake is inadequate or a deficiency is present. However, I would not say they directly stimulate hair regrowth, as the underlying cause of hair loss is often far more complex. If you are experiencing unexplained hair loss, I would recommend investigating the cause. As a trichologist, I assess the hair and scalp alongside factors such as recent illness, stress, weight loss, surgery, medication and diet. I also consider thyroid function and hormonal changes, including perimenopause, menopause and post-partum hormonal shifts. Depending on the individual, I may recommend discussing appropriate blood tests with a GP, including iron status (ferritin), vitamin D, vitamin B12, folate and thyroid function, with additional hormone testing where clinically appropriate. The priority is to understand what is driving the hair loss, as nutritional, hormonal, genetic and medical causes can require very different approaches. I always look at hair health beyond the roots, starting with the foundations of a balanced, protein-rich diet and adequate calorie intake. Good sleep, hydration and stress management are also important. I encourage good scalp health, gentle haircare practices and minimising excessive heat and chemical damage. Supplements and topical treatments work best alongside these foundations and cannot compensate for poor nutrition, significant calorie restriction, chronic stress or an untreated condition. My approach is always inside out: supporting the body nutritionally, maintaining a healthy scalp environment and incorporating topical care where appropriate. Consistency is key, as hair growth is a slow process, and results can take three to six months to become noticeable.
