At first, it seems like the kind of feature that would just work, but then the problems arise. The annoying part is that the protocol isn't broken exactly. It just has issues when it comes to handling the way most people actually build their setups. So it's better to turn it off. The idea was that one remote would control everything. Press power on your Apple TV or PlayStation, and your TV turns on, your receiver wakes up, and everything switches to the right input automatically. This is where the issue of the TV turning on by itself comes from. It's usually because a streaming device briefly woke up to check for updates and accidentally sent a signal that the rest of the system interpreted as a command to turn on. It could also be a timing issue, like a shutdown signal arriving late and getting misread as a wake command, and the whole system comes back on. Either way, it's annoying. Input switching is its own problem. The CEC protocol only lets 16 logical addresses across the entire network, and only three of those are reserved for playback devices. So when you start connecting multiple things, like a PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and a streaming stick, you run out of address space fast. That's when the system starts sending signals to the wrong place. Audio is where things get especially frustrating. A lot of TV manufacturers tie eARC directly to their CEC settings. So if you disable CEC on one troublesome device to stop it from stealing your inputs, your TV might respond by shutting off eARC entirely, and suddenly you're listening to everything through the TV's built-in speakers. You should turn off HDMI-CEC on everything Every brand hides the setting under a different name If your TV keeps switching inputs on its own, turning on when it shouldn't, or just generally acting like it has a mind of its own, it's time to turn off HDMI-CEC. Start with the TV itself. The annoying part is that every manufacturer calls this feature something different to make it sound appealing. On a Samsung, it's called Anynet+, and you'll find it under Settings, then General and the External Device Manager. On an LG, look for SIMPLINK under All Settings, then General, and then Devices until you find HDMI Settings. Sony calls it Bravia Sync, which is under Watching TV and External Inputs. You're going to need to disable both Device Auto Power and TV Auto Power. Once the TV is sorted, you've got a solid starting point. From there, go through your streaming devices. On Fire TV, you'll want to go to Settings, then Display & Sound, and finally disable HDMI CEC Device Control. On a Roku, head into System settings and uncheck 1-touch play and system standby. Gaming consoles are worth doing too, since a PlayStation or Switch downloading an update in the background can wake your TV up at 2 am. On a PS5, go to Settings, then System, and over to HDMI and turn off Enable HDMI Device Link. On a Nintendo Switch, go to System Settings, then TV Output, and turn off Match TV Power State. On Apple TV 4K, go to your Settings, then Remotes and Devices, and turn off Control TVs and Receivers. Once CEC is fully out of the picture, your home theater will actually do what you tell it to. That's fair, but it's not the end of that feature at all. The simplest replacement is a good universal remote. The Logitech Harmony line was discontinued, but units like the Harmony Elite are still widely used. Instead of chaining devices together through HDMI commands that may or may not fire correctly, a universal remote talks to each device directly using IR, RF, or IP signals. You can program in specific timing delays, like waiting a couple of seconds after the receiver powers on before telling it which input to switch to, so everything comes up in the right order every time, without touching the HDMI-CEC bus at all. For people who want their media setup put inside a broader smart home, local automation is the way to go. Running something like Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi paired with an IR/RF blaster like the BroadLink RM4 Pro lets you build out detailed, multi-device routines that execute exactly as written. Many modern TVs and receivers also support direct IP control over your home network, which means your automation hub can send power and volume commands straight through Wi-Fi or Ethernet without touching an HDMI cable at all.
