While this troubleshooting method has worked in the past, it doesn’t account for new Wi-Fi connections that might clog up the same channel. After a point, restarting the router didn’t fix our slow speed issues, and it became unbearable. I knew I could change my router’s signal channel to a less congested one, but I wasn’t sure where to start. Thankfully, with a simple Google search, I came across a Wi-Fi analyzer on the Play Store that could get the job done. As a free app, I was skeptical until I read the reviews. After downloading the app, I could instantly identify the bottleneck. My network’s data channel was very congested, flooded with networks used by my neighbors. Most of the networks were on the 2.4 GHz frequency, ranging from channels 36 to 50; mine was on channel 48. The Wi-Fi analyzer also made it easy to identify the bottleneck, as I could visualize it in the Channel Graph section. To figure out which channel to switch to, the app has a Best Channels section where I could evaluate my current Wi-Fi signal. Not only did it show me other networks that were using the same channel as mine, but it recommended the channel I should switch to. I could see the hills on the graph that were overlapping with my network and causing a bottleneck. After you switch to the recommended channel, the Best Channels section shows you how congested it is currently. With 0% congestion, my Wi-Fi was outputting the best optimum speed once again. I highly recommend going through this process if you live in an apartment building or in a dense neighborhood like mine. If you face similar issues, here’s how to change your network’s channel in your Wi-Fi router’s settings: Log in to your router’s admin page using its IP address in a browser. It’s usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. After you’ve logged into the admin page, navigate to the Wi-Fi or wireless settings menu. Find the Channel menu for the 2.4GHz or 5GHz frequencies. Select the less-congested channel the Wi-Fi Analyzer app recommended earlier. ISPs (Internet Service Providers) usually put a sticker on the router with the IP address in case your router’s IP address is different. Sometimes your router is already using the best channel, and you might face data speed issues. There will be times when the bottleneck in your network may have nothing to do with a congested channel. Using the Wi-Fi Analyzer can help pinpoint other issues with your router. Bottlenecks can be caused by congestion on your ISP’s end, old router hardware, or a single device might be hogging most of your data. You can identify the client or device that uses abnormal data speeds from the Who’s Connected to WiFi section within the app. Certain features, like Who’s Connected to WiFi, require a one-time payment or premium subscription. You can use alternatives like WiFiman to achieve the same result for free. While using the Wi-Fi analyzer periodically is a great way to make sure you’re not on a congested channel, I opted for a more permanent solution. Why you should upgrade from your ISP’s stock router They really are the worst If you have an old router, and you’re still facing data speed issues, it might be time for an upgrade. Stock routers provided by ISPs are notorious for using cheaper components and low-powered antennas, leading to dead Wi-Fi zones in your home. This is why it’s recommended to upgrade to a router that provides the latest Wi-Fi standards and added features. I recommend using a mesh router for your home, as they often have built-in features that don’t require much manual intervention. After being frustrated by my router’s antics, I upgraded to the AmpliFi HD Gaming edition mesh router. The accompanying AmpliFi app has all the features I mentioned earlier from the WiFi Analyzer app and lets me manage the router’s settings from my phone. For example, the router can switch to a less congested channel automatically without any input from me. You can also monitor the devices that use data and how much speed they consume. From the app’s interface, you can prioritize certain devices that need extra speed or limit/ban any unwanted devices that might be hogging your network. There are other neat features I like on my AmpliFi HD that you could also take advantage of: Dedicated IoT SSID for security cameras and other smart devices Parental Controls and Guest Access capabilities Teleport utility to access my home network remotely GeForce NOW mode for cloud gaming and streams Diagnostics Tool for monitoring packet loss, ping, and other networking issues Many of these features are available in mesh routers made by Google, ASUS, and countless other brands if you are looking for alternatives you can trust. Diagnosing your router can do wonders Using a free app like the WiFi Analyzer or WiFiman is always recommended if you are tired of randomly power-cycling your router and not seeing a difference in your data speeds. It’s a fantastic diagnostic tool that can elevate your browsing experience and deliver the data speeds you were supposed to get in the first place. But if you have the means, upgrading to a modern router might be the best long-term solution if you keep facing data speed issues despite trying everything.
