I shaved my head to stop guys hitting on me at church – dad was mad at ME when I came home

A WOMAN who turned her back on the Morman church has revealed she had to shave her head to stop guys hitting on her in the pews. Kit Barrus made the decision to chop off her long hair at 18 to put off guys who were looking for a wife. To keep living under their roof, her mum and dad gave her a condition – she had to keep going to church and attend a congregation for unmarried young adults which she compared to “speed dating”. But Kit insists she had absolutely no interest in finding a Mormon husband. She would sit towards the back of the church each Sunday, hoping to fulfil her obligation to her parents without drawing attention to herself – but it didn’t work. She said: “I was sitting in like a back pew just to check this box for my parents and show up, and every Sunday a different guy was sitting next to me and trying to shoot his shot and be friendly. “I was really, really abrasive because I’d grown up in this and dealt with it for so long. “Guys would come up to me and I would be like, ‘f*** off.’ I would literally put my hand up and be like, ‘Get away from me.’” Most read in Fabulous “I have to be here to live in my parents’ house, but I don’t want to talk to you.” After weeks of unwanted attention, Kit decided she needed a more drastic strategy. She added: “I was like, ‘I’m fed up with it. At this point, I just want to buzz my hair off and then they won’t talk to me anymore’. “So on my lunch break, I drove to Supercuts and I was like, ‘Just give me a buzz cut.’ I didn’t even know how to order one.” When Kit arrived home, her new haircut did not go down particularly well. She said: “My dad lost his s*** and took my car keys. He was like, ‘You’re not a boy. Stop acting like one.’” But as far as she was concerned, the haircut achieved exactly what she wanted. “And then nobody sat next to me anymore at church,” she said. “It was great.” “I never wanted to talk to boys in the church. I never once dated a boy from the church.” It wasn’t necessarily because she found every man there unattractive or boring. Instead, Kit says she struggled with what she perceived as rigid expectations around marriage and family life, and the ‘stay-at-home mum’ role women were expected to fulfil. She was already highly ambitious and independent, and found that attitude – particularly from men in the church – was difficult to reconcile with what she wanted from her own life. “Your job as a man isn’t to make all the money,” she says. “Your job as a man is to create a safe, nurturing environment where your family can be their best.” Now Kit has built a career partly around monetising male attention on OnlyFans, but insists her attitude towards relationships remains remarkably consistent. She still doesn’t care whether a partner earns more or less than she does. What matters to her is independence, ambition and effort. “I don’t necessarily want a rich partner,” Kit says. “But I want a man who, whatever he’s doing, is working hard at it and who has hobbies and interests.” “I don’t want a man who’s looking for a meal ticket.” Comment now
