(Image credit: Tom's Guide) The upcoming October Prime Day event is a prelude to the holiday shopping season, during which the online retail giant will offer deep discounts on numerous products. That’s good news if you’re hunting for a new laptop and don’t want to pay the exorbitant prices caused by RAMageddon. Best of all, you don’t have to wait until October 6 through October 7, because deals are already available to save you money. To be clear, finding good laptop deals right now isn’t easy given the glut of off-brand, underpowered machines sold by third parties no one has heard of. But that’s why I’ve searched through these murky waters to find laptops I’d actually recommend. This includes laptops like the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 for $459 and the HP OmniBook 3 for $629. Both are excellent for everyday work and web browsing, just like the rest of the laptops I’ve found on sale. The elephant in the room is MacBooks. While some are technically on sale, those discounts are based on new, higher prices driven by Apple's price hikes. The days of a $799 MacBook Air—a once-perennial deal—are long gone. However, even if you are paying more for a MacBook now, any discount is better than nothing. We’ll likely see better deals as we get closer to the October Prime Day event. However, if you don’t want to wait until October 6, the laptops I’ve selected below will meet your everyday computing needs.
