IDLY scrolling her phone during a quiet weekend away at her parents’, Jenya Reynolds was suddenly stopped in her tracks. To her horror, she realised she was watching a stomach-churning livestream video of her best friend Jenaé Newell being brutally raped and abused. So Jenya, a support worker from Las Vegas, turned amateur detective and set about gathering as much information as she could about the vile monster she had seen having sex on screen. In an extraordinary new TV documentary now on Hulu, she reveals how Eligio Bishop was making videos of his supposedly peaceful and healthy life in a Costa Rican paradise, in 2015, which were getting hundreds of thousands of views. But it quickly emerged that something darker was occurring. Within his so-called eco-cult, Carbon Nation, he enforced constant nudity, had multiple ‘wives’ who were brainwashed not only into having sex with him on camera but also forced to fight each other on his command. He is now serving a life sentence for rape, false imprisonment and revenge porn for what he did to Jenaé. The New Yorker called himself master teacher, then tribal chieftain and ultimately God himself, claiming: “I am the king of the Earth. I’m the Messiah. I’m God returning. I’m Christ.” Bishop was the only one allowed to use the toilet – his followers had to go outside. He told Rolling Stone magazine: “The human race needs to stop living the way we’re living — for our own survival. I promote living in tune with nature.” Incredibly, the father-of-four amassed 94,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel, NatureboyTV, and more than 50,000 on Facebook and Instagram. At times, the cameras were running nearly round-the-clock, turning Carbon Nation into an immersive, nonstop reality show. In one particularly disturbing video posted from Costa Rica, Bishop said: “I wanted my son to be so pure that he’d never know he was naked. I take baths with my kids. “I’m naked with my kids. I have sex in front of my kids. “My son be breastfeeding, I be making love to his mom. That’s how I get down around kids!” Former followers including a man called Alex Rapaso and another known as Velvet, explain in the four part docuseries how they were made to change their names, hand over credit cards and block all contact with friends and family. They were allowed one vegan meal a day. “We live away from everything,” Bishop would say in his videos. “We are a cult. I am a cult leader.” Many followers were recruited from deprived and vulnerable backgrounds. It has been widely reported how Bishop began to prey on young black people who were feeling marginalised by the first Trump administration, the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement. Bishop managed to convince them that melanin, which produces skin, hair, and eye pigmentation, has supernatural powers enhanced by the sun. Former follower Velvet explained in her TV interview: “People in the minority, we experience extreme poverty, we do not have access to adequate housing, adequate food sources. “I just didn’t want to be depressed anymore. I didn’t want to feel lonely anymore. I didn’t want to feel invisible. This could be where my life changes for the better.” And in an exclusive interview with The Sun, Jenya recalled how troubling it was watching the footage of her unsuspecting pal. One bit the other one’s boobs and banged her head against the rocks. I was convinced they would both drown. “It was unacceptable.” “He spoke to them in a demeaning way, like they were trash. He told the women they were nothing without him. He told them serving him was their privilege. “It was a cesspool, everyone was sleeping with everyone else, and they were all convinced Eligio was their best friend. “I saw him slap a man across the room who tried to feed him a strawberry. “It was a crazy environment. “He was recording porn and posting it online, saying it was sex education – it was horrendous to watch.” After Jenya saw the video of Bishop raping Jenaé, she immediately tried to reach out to her but discovered she had deactivated her phone and social media accounts. After an agonising two-week wait, Jenaé finally made contact. “She knew she was being filmed but thought it was for education videos; she had no idea they were being posted online,” Jenya said in our interview. “That was not educational; it was revenge porn. “When I finally explained to her what had been happening, she screamed. “I will never forget that scream. For two more weeks, she tried to protect him, but finally, we got him arrested.” Fellow cult members reveal Jenaé was attacked and raped as she tried to leave. Aaron tells the documentary: “Jenaé wanted to leave. She was hit that night because she was supposedly disrespecting Nature Boy.” Another man called Courtney adds: “We were hearing her getting slapped over and over again. The next thing you know they’re having sex.” Now Jenaé and Jenya are closer than ever, and Jenaé is writing a book about her five-year ordeal. Bishop, 42, is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole after being found guilty last year of rape, false imprisonment, and revenge porn in respect of Jenaé . Several of Bishop’s former cult members spoke during his sentencing: One woman said: “He said my soul belonged to him and there was absolutely no saying no to him.” Another added: “You were our guy, but now you’re a prisoner as you imprisoned us.” Bishop still claims he’s innocent and when he spoke to Rolling Stone magazine from prison in 2025 he insisted: “I’m a controversial figure because what I stand for goes against the power structure.” The Cult of Natureboy is streaming now on Hulu.
