I went to fetch the mail on Friday and saw one of those envelopes, never welcome, featuring the distinctive typography of forms from the Internal Revenue Service. Many of you will guess, immediately, that this was not a note from the IRS but one of those scammy financial things where they send you something that looks like a check but the “check” is the plastic worm on the hook of an unsolicited loan application. Kevin D. Williamson is national correspondent at The Dispatch and is based in Virginia. Prior to joining the company in 2022, he spent 15 years as a writer and editor at National Review, worked as the theater critic at the New Criterion, and had a long career in local newspapers.
