I had no idea school parents were SWINGERS until I saw wife-swapping in kids’ bedrooms & bowls of condoms at wild party

PLACING my glass of prosecco on the expensive quartz kitchen island, I looked around at the guests at my friend Sandy’s 45th birthday party. I’d known most of them for around ten years – many from the school run – so the mind-blowing sight about to greet me left me dizzy with shock. Her daughter Ivy and my daughter Immy, both 13, are part of a street dancing troupe and every Saturday we spend hours watching our girls practice. Sandy is beautiful and looks a decade younger than her age, probably because she works in beauty PR. We’d regularly go for ‘mum drinks’ at the pub, so I didn’t hesitate to say ‘yes’ when she invited me to her kid-free birthday bash. When my husband Dan, 45, who works in IT, and I turned up, the house was festooned with balloons, while the giant kitchen island was bulging with posh M&S canapés and bottles of booze. Sandy’s husband of 15 years, Phil, 46, a TV producer, was making espresso martinis, while she casually wafted around in a green, velvet catsuit which flattered her curves. Most of the guests were couples I had known for years and I ended up moaning to one mum, Magda, about how nobody ever volunteers for any Parent Staff Association (PSA) activities. But then Dan came over, looking utterly mystified. “Have you seen those lollies stuck to the wall?” he asked. “They’re laced with MDMA.” I was flabbergasted – and suddenly felt relieved that Sandy’s daughter was staying with relatives. Earlier, Phil had offered me one and luckily, I’d refused. I noticed he was sweating profusely, and now I knew he was on the class-A drug – also known as ecstasy – I wasn’t surprised. As Phil leant heavily against the big, American-style fridge while talking to another mum, I suddenly heard suspicious moaning sounds drifting down from upstairs. Dan and I exchanged shocked looks as Phil brushed a piece of hair from the face of the woman he was talking to, almost sensually. Needing the toilet, I cautiously made my way upstairs, but as I reached the top, I noticed one of the bedroom doors was open. Sexual noises were coming from inside and my eyes widened as I recognised the back of another school run dad’s head. I nearly tumbled back down the stairs as I noticed he was having sex with a woman who I couldn’t identify. But I knew from her hair colour it wasn’t his wife. Unable to help myself, I looked again. That’s when I noticed another couple on the floor, half naked and writhing around. I ran to the bathroom, breathless. What the hell was happening? What I thought would be a cosy catch-up was clearly a swinging party.I’m not naive – I know they happen – but I didn’t expect my suburban school mum mates to be involved. In the bathroom, I noticed a packet of condoms next to their posh Aesop hand soap. Clearly the evening’s antics had been well-planned. My head swam, as I realised I was a little drunk. I felt horribly uncomfortable as I heard muffled orgasmic noises coming from the bedroom next to the bathroom, which, to my disgust, seemed to be one of the kids’ rooms. Suddenly, there was a knock at the bathroom door. “You doing OK?” a voice asked. I opened the door to find Phil, who had changed out of his jeans and silk shirt into a loose tracksuit. As the door shut, a bonkers thought ran through my head: perhaps I wasn’t attractive enough to be part of his swinging scene? This was ridiculous, as I didn’t actually want to be. There was absolutely no way on earth that Dan and I would swap partners. We have an OK sex life, but it is what might be called ‘vanilla’. Downstairs, I found Dan in the hall talking to a stressed-looking Magda. In the front room, a couple who I must have known, but couldn’t distinguish from the tangle of body parts, were snogging passionately on the sofa. “We’re going,” I said to Dan, who nodded eagerly. SWINGING SCENE Magda also left with her husband, Derren, and we laughed as we walked back to our prospective houses, a bit drunk and relieved to have escaped.Derren, who’s quite shy, spluttered: “Who’d have thought there’d be swingers at the school gate?” In the weeks that followed, I didn’t talk to Dan about it. The atmosphere has been weird and intense between us ever since, as I can’t stop thinking how maybe, deep down, I had wanted to do something with another man. I didn’t fancy any of the dads and the thought of having sex and then having to face them on the school run gave me the ick. But the experience made me realise I wasn’t satisfied with mine and Dan’s run-of-the-mill sex life. I also started to realise there were signs I had missed that showed our pals were swingers. Once, at a pub quiz, Sandy had joked about there being some swingers locally. Now I think she was checking if I looked interested. And Phil has always been flirtatious with other women, once inappropriately complimenting another mum on her figure at a PSA event. They also have a jacuzzi in their back garden – and I’ve since heard they sometimes invite their neighbours over to share it with them. I felt so foolish for having not noticed earlier, especially as infidelity is not uncommon in the UK. A 2024 poll by the World Population Review found 36 per cent of Brits have admitted to cheating, while another survey by online wellness platform Medindia found nearly two million couples in the UK had tried swinging, with six million expressing an interest. But from my experience, the world of partner-swapping is not filled with wild, fun people. The parents at the party are all nice enough, but they are quite boring. They only chat about the minutiae of parenting, or moan about their kids’ teachers. Since the do, a wall of silence has descended around the whole thing. I can barely look the other parents who were there in the eye.Sandy and I are still pals, but I haven’t spoken to her about it because it all feels too embarrassing. She is as friendly as ever and we have lots of planned get-togethers over the coming festive weeks, so I don’t feel like I’ve been judged for not joining in. But I would be very surprised if Dan and I got an invite to her next house party.
