If you’re browsing online or heading into stores over the next few days — which 73% of shoppers plan to do, according to a recent survey by RetailMeNot — that’s what you should focus on. To help you get started, I curated a list of the best Labor Day deals across retailers like Amazon, Target, Old Navy, Brooks, Home Depot, REI and Ulta, where popular items and bestsellers are up to 75% off. You can convert the appliance to a handheld vacuum, letting you attach the included crevice and pet-multi tools when you want to clean stairs, windowsills or between couch cushions.Comfrt’s Dreamer Blanket comes highly recommended by NBC Selected commerce editor Cory Fernandez, who says it’s just as soft and cozy as you’d hope (the brand sent him one to try). Use it as your chance to stock up on basics and buy discounted pieces you’ve had your eye on to save for next year. If you see something you’re interested in, be sure to jump on it — the most popular brands, styles, colors and sizes sell out very quickly.Mattresses, furniture and major appliances: Deals on these categories are the bread and butter of all three-day holiday weekend sales. Shoppers tend to wait on purchasing mattresses, furniture and major appliances because they’re pricey, says Stephanie Carls, a retail insights expert at RetailMeNot. By offering deep discounts across a few days, retailers give customers time to compare prices and weigh options, plus, on top of deals, they offer add-ons like free delivery and installation, which could be the thing that finally makes someone take the leap. Porwal says using Labor Day to buy mattresses, furniture and major appliances is especially important this year — he expects prices to increase by the end of 2026 due to ongoing economic issues, so this may be the last time you see deals this low.The Labor Day sales you should skip this year are:Tech: Retailers offer the lowest prices of the year on items like TVs, gaming consoles, smart home devices, earbuds and Bluetooth speakers during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, says Carls. Unless you need something immediately, don’t add tech to your cart just yet. The only exception is laptops. “Higher memory costs are putting pressure on notebook pricing, so if you find a strong Labor Day deal on the exact laptop you want, I’d take it seriously,” says Carls. “I wouldn’t assume November automatically gets you a lower final price.”Toys: Toy deals are the most competitive leading up to the holidays, especially during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, says Carls. If you’re already thinking about buying them as gifts, you’ll save the most if you wait to shop.Fall and winter clothing, shoes and accessories: Retailers just rolled out next season’s fashion, so they’re not motivated to drop prices just yet. Wait until sales in October and November to save on denim, boots, coats and sweaters, for example, says Porwal.There are comparable Labor Day sales online and in stores, especially at big box retailers, so you’re guaranteed to find strong deals wherever you shop. A few things to keep in mind while deciding whether to leave your couch:Shopping online makes comparing prices and stacking savings easier, letting you consider the total value of a deal, not just the sale price, says Ashley Feinstein Gerstley, a shopping and savings expert at Rakuten. Open a few tabs and search for the exact same product at a handful of retailers to weigh which one offers the lowest price and lowest shipping fee. You can also shop through cash back apps and browser extensions online, which help you find additional promo codes and rewards, she says.Shopping in stores lets you try out big ticket items like furniture, mattresses and major appliances, giving you more confidence in pricey purchases. You can also ask a store associate about lower-priced floor models and open-box inventory, which you may never see advertised online, says Carls.Shipping fees add up, especially if you’re placing online orders at numerous retailers or buying big-ticket products that require installation. If your total goes up drastically once you consider shipping fees, see if you can buy online and pick up in store instead.Labor Day sales have already started. Retailers typically consider the Friday before the official holiday, which lands on Monday, Sept. 7 this year, the start of the long weekend, so all sales are now live.Plan for most Labor Day sales to end on the holiday, Monday, Sept. 7. Some may extend longer into the week, but don’t plan on it — aim to get all your shopping done by Labor Day, but shop sooner if you can, says Carls. “Summer clearance is already working with fewer sizes, colors and models, so the thing you actually want can disappear before the promotion does,” she says. “The discount may hang around, but your exact patio set, for example, may not.”All the experts I talked to agree that the best way to save the most money during Labor Day sales is to stack your savings. That means looking at the deal price as the starting point and combining it with additional offers to save even more, says Gerstley. For example, search for promo codes to lower prices further, shop through cash back apps and browsers to put money back in your pocket, and pay with credit cards that let you earn rewards as you spend.Additionally, make sure you’re comparing prices across retailers before buying anything, says Porwal. Since so many retailers are hosting sales right now, they’re all competing for your attention, and you never know when one might lower prices just a little bit more to give themselves an edge, or throw in extras that make a purchase more worthwhile, like free shipping, delivery, install or haul-away. Don’t be afraid to ask about price matching, too, says Carls. If a retailer really wants your business, they’ll be open to negotiating with you.Last but not least, don’t feel like you absolutely have to buy something if deals aren’t compelling, says Gerstley. As we enter the final quarter of the year, sales are plentiful with early Black Friday and Cyber Monday offers starting in October, and Amazon Prime Big Deal Days might be around the corner (it hasn’t been confirmed yet, however).
