If someone told you that they just spent $20,000 modifying their car, you might think they are being completely irrational. If you have that kind of money sitting around, why not just sell your current car and buy something faster if that is what you want? That always seems like the smarter move. Instead of adding a supercharger, upgrading the suspension, swapping exhaust systems, and replacing cooling components, move up the model range. Porsche already builds faster 911s. Chevrolet already builds faster Corvettes. If you want more performance, simply buy a higher-performing model. But when you drive something like RR Racing's 500-plus-horsepower Porsche 981 Cayman S, the modification route suddenly makes sense. The appeal isn't simply creating a faster car. It's creating the car you always wished the factory had built. The appeal is having a car that more closely aligns with what you want. Free from factory compromises A car tailored to you and you alone Buying a faster version of a factory car is fine. If you have a Porsche Cayman S, stepping up to a GT4 is perfectly reasonable. However, as wonderful as the GT4 is, you are still buying the car the manufacturer wanted to sell. Every production vehicle is the result of compromise. Engineers may want to squeeze more horsepower out of an engine or fit wider tires under the fenders, but they don't work in a vacuum. They have to satisfy emissions regulations, noise standards, fuel economy targets, warranty requirements, production costs, and marketing departments. They also have to protect the hierarchy of the model lineup. If Porsche gave every Cayman as much performance as the chassis could handle, there would be less incentive for customers to spend significantly more on a 911. The aftermarket doesn't have those constraints. The aftermarket asks, “What if?” What if the car had another 200 horsepower? What if the suspension was tuned specifically for your favorite road course? What if the exhaust sounded exactly the way you wanted? This is where the value comes from. The RR Racing supercharger kit will set you back about $20,000 when all is said and done. At first glance, that sounds outrageous. You are spending nearly 50% of the car's value for more power. That is true. But take a look at the prices for 981 Caymans right now. A nice GT4 with 385 horsepower is going to cost you about $115,000. And for that sum, you get a wonderful car that also comes with suspension and aero upgrades over the Cayman S. However, for $40,000 less, you can get the RR Racing supercharged Cayman and the 500 horsepower that comes with it. The joy of driving without fear A car you actually want to use The modified car will never be as collectible as a pristine GT4. But are you buying a Porsche to collect and stare at in the garage? If you are buying a Porsche to drive and drive hard, the collectibility factor doesn’t matter as much. In fact, in many ways, driving a less collectible car is more enjoyable. Risking a pristine Cayman GT4 that is steadily increasing in value on a racetrack might not be something you want to do. If you do take it to the track, you will likely not be pushing it very hard because you are too worried about something happening to it. However, with a modified car, you are much more likely to push it to the limit. And pushing a car to the limit can put a smile on your face in a way that a Cayman under a car cover, and hooked up to a battery tender, can’t. Build it right or don't build it at all The experience is your ROI Of course, not every modification is a good one. We've all seen sports cars ruined by bargain-bin coilovers, oversized wheels, obnoxious exhausts, or horsepower upgrades that stress the engine to the point of teetering on failure. Throwing money at a car doesn't automatically make it better. The best builds have a clear philosophy. Every modification complements the next. More power is matched with better cooling. Higher speeds call for stronger brakes. Suspension changes improve confidence instead of sacrificing ride quality. The end result isn't a collection of aftermarket parts; it's a cohesive package that feels as though it could have rolled off the factory floor. That's what impressed me most about the modified Cayman I drove. It was still in the development phase, so it wasn’t perfect, but I could tell that perfection was the goal. The engineering was well-thought-out. The components used were top-notch. You likely won't recoup the cost when you sell a modified car. But resale value isn’t the point. Nobody asks whether a dream vacation will appreciate in monetary value. The enjoyment is the payoff. It is the experience that matters. That is what you are paying for. If you value a warranty, maximum resale value, and the peace of mind that comes with an untouched car, that's a perfectly reasonable choice. And quite frankly, that is the direction most people go. But you are not most people. You want something different. You want a car designed to thrill you and you alone. Not a committee. Not a group of automotive journalists. And not your neighbors. Spending $20,000 modifying a sports car is not irrational. Sometimes the smartest upgrade isn't buying a different car. Sometimes it's investing in the one that's already sitting in your garage until it finally becomes the car you've imagined every time you slide behind the wheel.
