A prebuilt NAS arrives with an operating system for a perfectly sensible reason. The manufacturer knows the hardware, can integrate its own utilities, and wants you to store files without first turning storage administration into a side project. I’ve used both UGOS Pro and ZimaOS enough to appreciate how much easier they can make running a home server. But after installing TrueNAS 26 on a NAS, I kept finding that I preferred an operating system built to show me what my storage was actually doing, even when that meant accepting a little more complexity. TrueNAS puts storage management ahead of everything else The storage layer finally feels deliberately exposed to me truenas The first difference appeared before I installed a single application or even thought about running a virtual machine. TrueNAS expects me to care about pools, datasets, permissions, snapshots, replication, and the rest of the storage configuration beneath my shares. It doesn’t try very hard to hide those details, even though they might look intimidating at first. I like that, because storage is the reason the machine exists in the first place. That changes how I think about organizing data, too. Instead of creating a few broad folders and promising myself I’ll clean things up later, I can decide up front which data deserves its own dataset, snapshot schedule, permissions, or replication policy. I don’t always get every decision right the first time, and that’s part of the point. TrueNAS gives me enough visibility to notice when my original plan was too simple and to adjust it before the mess gets bigger. TrueNAS makes more sense if you actually want to manage storage rather than just create shared folders and forget about them. If your NAS workload is simple, the extra control can feel unnecessary. Once you start separating application data, backups, media, snapshots, and replication policies, that extra structure becomes much easier to appreciate. TrueNAS 26 keeps that storage-first approach front and center without forcing me into the shell for every meaningful change. I can handle most of the work in the web interface, but the system still expects me to understand what I’m changing. That fits me better than an interface that smooths over too much of the underlying structure. I don’t need every detail staring at me constantly, but I do want it available when something needs attention. I’d rather work through a configuration I can inspect than get stuck wondering what a simpler interface decided on my behalf. TrueNAS handles more than storage without losing focus A NAS in my home doesn’t stay limited to SMB shares for long. Modern hardware has enough CPU power, memory, and fast storage to run applications, containers, and the occasional virtual machine without immediately falling over. TrueNAS gives me those options without making them feel like the main event. Storage still comes first, and the extra workloads sit on top of that rather than pulling the whole system in another direction. TrueNAS gives me more room to make essential choices, and I’ve found that I’d rather have that room than another layer of convenience. I also don’t want application storage to become a separate universe I only think about when something breaks. Application data can live on datasets that use the same snapshot, permission, and replication tools as everything else. A virtual machine can have storage carved out specifically for its workload, rather than being lost in a generic application directory. I still have to decide where things belong, but at least the operating system keeps that decision visible. TrueNAS 26 gives me enough flexibility that I don’t feel pressured to run another platform to host a few additional services. I can keep the NAS focused on storage while still using the hardware for workloads that make sense there. I’m not interested in cramming every service on my network into one box just because I can. I do want to use spare resources without abandoning the storage model that made me choose TrueNAS in the first place. TrueNAS knowledge transfers more easily between different systems I would rather learn one platform than several appliances The longer I run different NAS boxes, the more this matters. Every manufacturer has its own terminology, menu layout, application system, storage workflow, and little habits I eventually have to remember. None of those differences is especially difficult on its own. The irritation comes when I switch between systems and have to remember how three different interfaces want me to accomplish essentially the same task. TrueNAS strips away much of that hardware-specific context. Once I know how I want to arrange datasets, shares, users, permissions, snapshots, replication, containers, and virtual machines, those concepts carry over to another compatible TrueNAS system. The enclosure can change without forcing me to relearn how I think about the server. That makes the time I spend learning the platform feel much less temporary. It also changes how I look at NAS hardware. I can pay closer attention to drive bays, processors, memory capacity, network interfaces, PCIe expansion, and other hardware features without assuming the factory operating system is permanently attached to the box. If the hardware meets my needs and TrueNAS supports it properly, replacing the bundled software becomes a realistic option rather than a weird detour. That flexibility becomes more appealing as NAS hardware starts to look less like an appliance and more like a compact server. Factory NAS operating systems still have compelling advantages UGOS and ZimaOS make excellent cases for staying put There are good reasons to leave a prebuilt NAS exactly as the manufacturer shipped it. UGOS Pro benefits from being designed around UGREEN hardware, so storage management, updates, hardware monitoring, native applications, and other convenience features all live in a single environment. Routine administration becomes pleasantly boring, which is exactly what some people want from a NAS. If the goal is to install drives, create shares, run a few services, and move on, UGOS Pro does that very well. ZimaOS makes a different case, especially if the NAS is serving double duty as a home server. Its application experience makes Docker-based services easy to discover and deploy, while support for Docker Compose allows stepping outside the curated options when necessary. That can remove a surprising amount of friction when all you want is to get Jellyfin, Syncthing, Paperless-ngx, or a few dashboards running. For an application-heavy setup, that convenience is hard to dismiss. Both systems also remove decisions that TrueNAS presents directly to me. That isn’t automatically a weakness. More control means more ways to make a bad call, and ZFS rewards thinking through the storage layout before filling the disks and hoping for the best. Someone who doesn’t need that level of involvement could easily spend more time managing TrueNAS without getting much in return. TrueNAS still makes more sense once needs start growing I keep coming back to TrueNAS because my storage needs rarely stay as simple as they were on day one. I start with shared folders, then I want better snapshots, more deliberate permissions, replication, application storage, and backup policies that treat different data differently. The features that seemed overly detailed at first become useful one by one. I’d rather grow into controls that are already there than discover later that the simpler interface has become the thing I’m working around. I also don’t need TrueNAS to beat UGOS Pro or ZimaOS at everything. UGOS Pro can offer a better appliance experience, and ZimaOS can be an easier way to turn a NAS into an application-heavy home server. That doesn’t weaken the case for TrueNAS because I’m not choosing a NAS OS based on which one wins the most categories. I care most about how well it handles storage once the setup is no longer simple. Modern NAS hardware makes that preference harder to ignore. Once I’m dealing with upgradeable memory, faster processors, NVMe storage, multi-gigabit networking, and expansion options, I don’t want the software to decide that the machine should stay within the boundaries the manufacturer originally imagined. I want to choose how those resources are split between storage and other workloads. TrueNAS gives me more room to make those choices, and I’ve found that I’d rather have that room than another layer of convenience. TrueNAS changed what I expect from NAS software Installing TrueNAS 26 didn’t suddenly make UGOS Pro or ZimaOS look bad. Both make sensible compromises and are easier to recommend for a NAS that requires less attention after setup. UGOS Pro benefits enormously from its integration with UGREEN hardware, while ZimaOS remains especially compelling for approachable self-hosting. I’d still use either when those strengths match what I need from the machine. What changed was my view of the default choice once the hardware was capable enough to justify something more flexible. If I’m already comfortable managing datasets, permissions, snapshots, applications, and the occasional virtual machine, TrueNAS gives me more control without requiring me to build the entire platform from scratch on bare Linux. I lose some of the polish that comes with software designed around a specific enclosure, but I gain a storage platform I can keep using when the hardware changes. For the way I use a NAS now, that trade-off makes more sense. TrueNAS Core TrueNAS may require more detailed configuration, but that results in a more capable, flexible OS for my NAS.
