Hyundai now has its own Kia Carens Clavis EV but calls it an SUV. Will Neira come to India?

Hyundai has unveiled the Neira Prototype at GIIAS 2026, previewing a three-row electric MPV for Indonesia. The closed-off fascia features a connected LED light bar, vertically stacked lighting elements and a redesigned bumper with prominent silver cladding that lends it a more SUV-inspired appearance. However, the prototype gets unique dual-tone alloy wheels, chrome door handles, revised side cladding and roof rails. The dashboard design is almost identical to the Carens Clavis EV, featuring twin 12.3-inch displays, a dedicated climate control panel and a floating centre console. Hyundai has added its signature four-dot steering wheel motif along with black upholstery to create some visual distinction. The prototype showcased at GIIAS is configured as a seven-seater, although Hyundai has not confirmed whether additional seating layouts will be offered when the production version arrives.Powertrain details yet to be confirmedHyundai has not revealed technical specifications for the Neira Prototype. Battery capacity, motor output, driving range and charging performance remain undisclosed.However, given the close resemblance to the Kia Carens Clavis EV, the Neira could eventually adopt the same electric drivetrain. In India, the Carens Clavis EV is offered with 42kWh and 51.4kWh battery packs paired with a front-mounted electric motor producing up to 171hp and 255Nm of torque. The larger battery delivers a claimed MIDC-certified range of up to 490km, while both variants support 100kW DC fast charging.Local production planned for IndonesiaHyundai has confirmed that the production-spec Neira will be manufactured at its Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (HMMI) facility. According to Hyundai Motors Indonesia President Director Kenny Lee, the model has been developed with Indonesian families in mind, combining a spacious three-row cabin with the company's latest EV technology.The vehicle displayed at GIIAS is still a prototype, and Hyundai says further development will continue before it reaches showrooms.Could it make its way to India?The Neira's debut also raises questions about Hyundai's future plans for India. During its Investor Day presentation in 2025, Hyundai announced that it would introduce a new MPV in the Indian market before the end of the decade.With the Neira now previewing a three-row electric model closely related to the Kia Carens Clavis EV, it has emerged as another potential candidate for India.
