The 199-meter vessel traveled from Singapore to Ghana with the retrofit system installed on its existing diesel engine. Newlight also reported a 28 percent reduction in CO₂ emissions and a 22 percent decrease in carbon monoxide emissions during the voyage. The results give the technology its first extended commercial test at sea. Newlight now says it has agreements covering 12 vessels across several shipping companies. Broader fleet deployments are planned for next year. The company also received regulatory approval for its system from RINA. Shipowners seek lower emissions Shipping remains heavily dependent on liquid fuels, creating a difficult transition for operators with existing fleets. The industry moves more than 80 percent of global trade by volume. Fuel can also represent roughly half of a vessel’s operating expenses.
