Hungary PM’s Migration Move: What’s Behind the Continuing ‘State of Crisis’?

Human rights groups and the UN Refugee Agency have reacted with disquiet to the recent decision by the Hungarian government to extend the country’s legal “State of Crisis Due to Mass Migration”, which gives the government extraordinary powers that the EU’s highest court has judged incompatible with EU law. “The Hungarian government should end the state of crisis, ensure effective access to asylum, and bring Hungary’s asylum system into compliance with EU and international law,” Lydia Gall, senior researcher (Europe) at Human Rights Watch, wrote on September 8.
