Human factor still key: Nvidia, Palantir share results of first AI-managed critical supply chain

SEPTEMBER 15, 2026 09:09Nvidia and Palantir announced on Thursday that they will incorporate an artificial intelligence model into the control of their critical supply chains, giving the automated system decision-making power."Nvidia has arguably the most valuable, intricate, and complex supply chain in the world. Our sovereign stack, powered by Nemotron models and Ontology, is delivering capabilities that exceed the frontier while providing alpha protection qualities unavailable otherwise,” said Alex Karp, cofounder and CEO of Palantir Technologies.The deployment, according to the companies, will allow for "unprecedented supply chain visibility, identify constraints, continuously codify operational expertise and guide decisions at machine speed."The system will be first implemented in Nvidia's supply chain, which spans millions of parts, thousands of suppliers, and a global network of manufacturing partners, with the objective of unifying every team worldwide into one operating system that improves their efficiency."Supply chains are the operating system of the physical economy, and AI factories are among the most complex systems ever built,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia. “From wafers and components to manufacturing, systems and customer delivery, hundreds of companies and trillions of dollars of global economic activity come together to deliver AI infrastructure. (credit: REUTERS)The human side is still key for the systemEven if Nvidia reported that planners improved their numbers when using the new model, it also said human employees still provided key insights that weren't possible to get using only an AI system.According to the company, emails exchanged with partners that week, severe weather in the forecast for a key region, an ongoing geopolitical event, or understanding the transcript from the last supplier debrief call were factors the AI struggled to incorporate when working across the entire supply chain.The company explained that those inputs were better implemented by human instinct created by years of work rather than by the mathematical algorithm that guided the system, while the AI had an important role in working around the repetitive and predictable tasks.The company concluded that the best implementation would help workers spend less time reconstructing routine decisions so they could focus on unpredictable situations.Additionally, the Nvidia explained that the model was only going to train according to insights provided by the workers, with no changes made during production while managing a supply chain.Follow us on Google
