Hugo Weaving’s Sequel To 32-Year-Old Cult Classic Gets Major Filming & Release Update

Fans of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert are going to have something to celebrate in 2028 as the 32-year-old movie is finally getting a sequel. Guy Pearce, who played Adam (also known as Felicia Jollygoodfellow) in the 1994 original, let the news of the follow-up filming schedule slip during an interview with Good Morning America on the red carpet for The Dog Stars. "Well, the sequel, which is going to be—what are we now, ’26? We’ll probably shoot it ’27, it’ll come out ’28," Pearce revealed to the interviewer. The original cast is set to return, including Hugo Weaving, and the sequel will reportedly still include Terence Stamp, who passed away in August 2025 at the age of 87. According to director Stephan Elliott, they "decided to pre-shoot all the Bernadette scenes" before Stamp's passing. "When the AI wars broke out, Terence [Stamp] was indignant that he didn’t want a digital clone of himself playing Bernadette," Elliott said of the late actor. "He wanted the chance to put the character down himself. And I will quote him in this case. He said: 'Just in case I don’t make the start line.'" News of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert's follow-up came out in 2024 after Elliott shared the information with Deadline. "I’m not repeating myself, we’ll start the new film in Australia, but by God, we’re going on one helluva journey,” Elliott said. "The original cast is on board, I’ve got a script that everybody likes, we’re still working out deals. … It’s happening." The movie followed Tick (Weaving), who goes by Mitzi Del Bra for their drag show, on a journey from Sydney to Alice Springs through the Simpson Desert. He is joined by Adam and a transgender woman named Bernadette Bassenger (Stamp) as the trio of performers travel on a bus that is lovingly dubbed Priscilla. They run into mechanical issues, encounter homophobic and transphobic bigots, and find support where they least expect it before completing their journey. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert became a cult classic for its humor and heart, positively portraying queer and transgender themes while also not avoiding the more difficult topics. It has a 94% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes — and an 88% from fans — and it also earned an Academy Award in 1995 for Costume Design. Weaving, also known for his roles in Lord of the Rings and The Matrix, has the TV miniseries The Great White also in pre-production alongside The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 2. Pearce has four projects in the works, but having a filming schedule for the long-awaited follow-up is a good sign.
