Are Caleb and Ruby heading for trouble? (Picture: ITV) The Miligans, Caleb and Ruby (William Ash and Beth Cordingly) have had a right old time in Emmerdale recently, haven’t they? Caleb, since deciding to embrace his dark side all over again, went all in on his mission to destroy the life of his half nephew, Joe Tate (Ned Porteous). I mean, in fairness, Joe did employ the services of a seriously corrupt and creepy doctor to forcibly steal Caleb’s kidney to save his own life – that’s not something many people would take lying down, is it? Organ theft? Caleb saw his opportunity as Joe entered, what appeared to be, the happiest era of his life: he’d won the heart of Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley), who was about to become his wife, all while carrying his baby. He’d even agreed to stop being such a scumbag and live a more honest life in order to keep Dawn around. Then Caleb stuck his nose in and everything pretty much went to the dogs. Caleb and Ruby paid for their sins (Picture: ITV) Seeing an opportunity for revenge, Caleb used Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) as a pawn to infiltrate their relationship and tear it apart, masterminding a plot that would see Dawn leave Joe waiting at the altar on their wedding day, while she, Billy, her kids and Joe’s unborn baby would flee. As the most complex of soap schemes often do, though, it went belly up when Dawn learned that the attack on Billy wasn’t, in fact, Joe’s doing, as he and Caleb had led her to believe, and she abandoned the escape plan, heading back to the wedding marquee to exchange vows with Joe. It all went off without a hitch, they got married, everyone made friends over the reception buffet and they all live happily ever after. Jimmy King (Nick Miles), swerving his car to avoid hitting Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson), crashed directly into the marquee, and promptly died, while Joe and Dawn were rushed to the hospital, gravely injured. Caleb’s revenge against Joe saw Ruby face the worst ending imaginable (Picture: ITV) Dawn delivered their baby boy, and although it seemed that she’d pull through, it wasn’t to be, and she perished shortly afterward – and with her, so too died the last bastion of humanity left in Joe, whose entire being was consumed with an unquenchable thirst for vengeance. While Vinny Dingle escaped with a mere beating, Ruby wasn’t so lucky, and she ended up locked in a coffin underground – while still alive. After drugging Caleb, Joe found sheer glee in taunting him with the fact that his beloved wife was trapped underground, terrified, traumatised and very quickly running out of air. It was only due to the timely intervention of Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough), who’s influence on Joe saw him relent and reveal where Ruby was buried, allowing her to be saved before she suffocated. Speaking exclusively to Metro at the Cure Usher ball, William Ash said: ‘I think it’s kind of gone as far as it can go now, hasn’t it? ‘You never know what the writers have in store, but it was pretty drastic, I think, that end bit. Burying her alive and then not taking her to hospital afterwards – it’s a bit extreme.’ William teased the future of the couple (Picture: FARRELL / BACKGRID) So does that mean that Caleb and Ruby will be entering a quiet period? Well, perhaps not. William also teased that things won’t be all plain sailing between the Machiavellian couple: ‘We’ve got some conflict coming up, I think, ‘It gets a bit dull when everyone’s getting on and everybody’s having a nice time with each other. ‘Hopefully real life is like that, but with Emmerdale you’ve got to have the conflict there, and that’s the best stuff to play.’ In addition to that, the Emmerdale landing page features a new picture of Caleb and Ruby, clearly signalling that they’ll be a prominent fixture going forward.
