Huge inferno rips through scrapyard in Barnsley as firefighters battle to tackle blaze

See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 13:28 EDT, 6 September 2026 | Updated: 14:53 EDT, 6 September 2026 A massive inferno has ripped through a scrapyard in Barnsley with firemen battling to contain the blaze overnight.The inferno broke out at a site housing scrap metal and tyres on Boulder Bridge Lane in the area of Carlton.Several crews and ten fire engines from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene on Saturday and attempted to get the blaze under control into this morning. An aerial ladder platform and a number of operational support vehicles were also deployed at the fire's peak to help extinguish the flames.Video footage of the blaze shared on social media showed thick black plumes of smoke – which could be seen for miles around – billowing hundreds of metres into the sky.Flames at the scrapyard were filmed swirling viciously as firefighters used their water hoses to control the raging inferno.The fire service immediately urged people living nearby to keep their doors and windows shut due to the large amount of smoke.Members of the public were also told to avoid the area as the blaze raged on. While a third, who saw the fire from Pontefract, commented that the scrapyard blaze 'looked like a black tornado'.A South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: 'Fire crews are still at the fire in Carlton and are expected to remain there for the rest of the day.'Please be aware that Boulder Bridge Road is currently closed and will be for several hours.'Do YOU have a story?
