Huge blaze breaks out at apartment block in Majorca holiday resort leaving at least five injured and several trapped

A HUGE fire has broken out at an apartment block in a resort on the holiday hotspot island of Majorca. At least five people are reportedly injured while several others are said to be trapped as flames tear through the building. A fire has broken out in Majorca (stock) Credit: Cover Images The blaze broke out around 6.45pm local time today on the first floor of a five-storey block of flats in Playa de s’Arenal. The building is located on Majorca’s southern coast just over four miles from the island airport. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Police, paramedics and firefighters raced to the scene. It is understood the first wave of calls to police included reports of several people being trapped inside the burning complex. Lifeguards at the beach witnessed plumes of black smoke rising from the building into the air before they alerted emergency services. Local media are reporting “four or five” people who were unable to exit the apartment block. They are said to have gone up onto the roof to make it easier for their rescue to take place. At least three people are said to have suffered smoke inhalation. Most read in The Sun Meanwhile, the fire is believed to have been brought under control. It is not yet clear if any tourists have been caught up in the drama and what their nationalities are. Playa de s’Arenal marks the southeastern end of the continuous Playa de Palma beach.
