Mike Huckabee’s approach to the West Bank challenges both Israel’s critics and defenders: condemn crimes, enforce the law, and reject collective blame.Follow us on GoogleUS Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee gestures during a press conference after he met residents of Turmus Ayya, a Palestinian town near Ramallah in the West Bank, September 5, 2026.(photo credit: REUTERS/AMMAR AWAD)SEPTEMBER 6, 2026 05:56US Ambassador Mike Huckabee has offered a model for how a genuine ally should confront one of Israel’s most sensitive challenges by condemning wrongdoing without turning it into an indictment of an entire society. In his Thursday interview, Huckabee denounced violence against Palestinians, demanded consequences for perpetrators, and stressed that they represent only a tiny minority of the roughly half a million Israelis living in Judea and Samaria. He also defended Israel’s right to build in Area C under the Oslo Accords framework. Those positions belong together.International discussion of the West Bank too often erases distinctions. A criminal attack by several Jewish extremists becomes a judgment on “the settlers,” then on Israel itself.Defenders of Israel can make the opposite mistake by minimizing lawlessness because hostile actors will exploit it. Huckabee rejects both distortions. He condemns violence by Israelis against Palestinians as firmly as he does violence by Palestinians against Israelis, while refusing to let masked attackers stand in for hundreds of thousands of Israelis who live peacefully in the West Bank. Moral clarity hinges on making both judgments at once. His willingness to go to affected communities gives his words weight. When Huckabee visited Taybeh after reports of violence against its Palestinian Christian community, he met residents and called for those responsible for terror and violence to be found and prosecuted.US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee during a press conference after he met residents of Turmus Ayya, a Palestinian town near Ramallah in the West Bank, September 5, 2026. (credit: REUTERS/AMMAR AWAD)After the more recent attacks in Kusra, he again pressed Israeli authorities and used severe language about the perpetrators. Going to the place, hearing the people affected, pressing the authorities, and then telling the public plainly what happened is far more meaningful than issuing distant diplomatic statements. The same clarity applies to the E1 and Area C regions. Israel has moved forward with marketing the first 1,400 housing units in E1 between Jerusalem and Ma’aleh Adumim, drawing renewed condemnation abroad.Huckabee on Israeli rights in the West BankHuckabee has said Israelis have a right to build in Area C under the Oslo Accords. Supporting that right does not require excusing intimidation, assault, or property crimes against Palestinians. Jewish communities should not have their legitimacy erased because extremists commit crimes, and extremists should not receive immunity because they claim to act for the Jewish people. The answer to accusations that Israel is indifferent to Palestinian rights cannot be reflexive denial whenever an Israeli commits a crime. It should be the confident application of Israeli law.Arrest suspects when evidence warrants it. Investigate attacks seriously. Protect civilians. Prosecute offenders. A democratic state proves its legitimacy not by claiming that its citizens never do wrong, but by showing that wrongdoing has consequences and that no political or religious cause places anyone above the law.The overwhelming majority of Israelis living beyond the Green Line are not storming Palestinian villages or taking over homes. They are raising families, working, studying, serving, and living under extraordinary political and security pressures.Allowing a fringe to become the public face of that population is unfair to them and damaging to Israel. The answer is not to minimize the fringe, but to isolate it by condemning criminals, enforcing the law, and saying that their conduct does not describe a society, a settlement movement, or a country.Huckabee’s approach emphasizes truth over slogansHuckabee’s approach offers a better standard for discussing the West Bank by providing precision over slogans. Say who committed an act and who was harmed. Distinguish allegations from established facts. Demand consequences where crimes occurred. Defend Israel when accusations are false or inflated. Protect Palestinians when they are victims of wrongdoing. Refuse to let extremists dictate how millions of people are described.Because Huckabee is a long-standing supporter of Israel, his criticism carries particular weight. Israel does not need allies who flatter it into complacency or critics who seize every crime as evidence against the nation. It needs people willing to state the whole truth. Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria are not synonymous with violent extremists. Palestinian civilians are entitled to protection from crime. Israel has legitimate rights in Area C. Those who violate the law should face consequences.Huckabee cuts through the noise because he is willing to say all of it, and Israel and the world at large need more voices willing to do the same.Follow us on Google
