WINDOW BOX WONDERS: Pick up a window box planter at The Range, reduced to £7.49, or reuse old pots. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! A budget option is to keep some large yoghurt pots and wash with hot, soapy water. Once dry, use scissors to create some drainage holes and place them on a small plate before planting. Just raid your cutlery drawer for old spoons to fill planters with compost, and use an old fork to prick holes in the soil for seeds. TURN OVER A NEW LEAF: Salad leaves like rocket are easy to grow, and a packet of seeds will set you back around £1.50-£2 at a local garden centre. You need to press them into the soil, just below the surface, and in about three weeks you’ll have leaves galore. Most read in Money Once you harvest the first crop, they will keep on growing. ROOT ABOUT: Radishes can be ready for your plate in around four weeks, so start searching for good deals on seeds. They need a deep pot, so if you’re using yoghurt containers, make them family-sized tubs. Fill with compost, from £5.99 at B&M, and get a pack of seeds at wilko.com for 79p. Plant them 1cm deep and a few centimetres apart. SPEEDY SPINACH: Leafy greens such as baby spinach are easy to grow on your windowsill. Like rocket, they will be ready to eat in about four weeks and will always grow back. FAMILY FUN: Keep kids busy this summer by getting them to grow their own cress. All you need is a shallow container, such as a tray or plate. Add a damp layer of cotton wool or kitchen towel and sprinkle with seeds. You can pick cress seeds up for £1.35 at justseed.com, or less at a garden centre. The cress should be ready to add to salads or sandwiches in around a week.
