He defeated compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals on Sept. 11. Shelton also delivered a legendary performance against No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. He had previously lost all three meetings against the Spaniard.The 22-year-old continues to dazzle with a blistering serve that topped 149 mph against Alcaraz, easily marking the fastest at the 2026 US Open. His athleticism has also hinted that something special is brewing for the Americans. Shelton is expected to have a boisterous crowd behind him and has been feeding off the frenzy throughout the tournament. A win would make Shelton the first Black man to win a US Open since Arthur Ashe in 1968 and the first American since Andy Roddick in 2003. Zverev is looking to capture his first US Open title, adding to his French Open triumph in June and a runner-up at Wimbledon. The German has benefited from injury absences of Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz in recent months.He has one of the most lethal first serves in tennis and is riding a career wave of confidence similar to Shelton’s surge.
