Capcom's popular survival horror video game series returned this year with a fresh take from director Zach Cregger, the mastermind behind Barbarian and Weapons. Resident Evil tackles a whole new story set in Raccoon City, introducing Austin Abrams as the unsuspecting medical courier Bryan. The movie follows his attempt to survive a delivery that becomes increasingly dangerous due to the T-virus spreading and infecting multiple people in his path. Sony put the movie in theaters in September to incredible success. Critics raved about the franchise revival, netting Resident Evil a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were nearly as enthusiastic, making it Verified Hot at 90% on the Popcornmeter. That translated to Resident Evil's record-breaking box office, which sits at over $400 million worldwide thanks to people's willingness to see it in theaters versus waiting for it to come home. The movie is no longer exclusive to theaters, as Resident Evil's digital release date has come. This opens up a whole new option to experience the movie alone or with others. While it is not yet on streaming through a subscription service, here's all the confirmed info we have about how to watch Resident Evil at home right now and in the future. Resident Evil (2026) Is Now Available To Rent Or Buy Digitally Sony kept Resident Evil exclusive to theaters for 46 days, holding off on moving the film to digital services any sooner due to the interest audiences continued to show in the United States and abroad. But after six weeks of only being available on the big screen, Resident Evil officially released on digital on November 3, 2026. The movie is currently available to either buy or rent on all major PVOD platforms. This includes Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home. Pricing is consistent across all three platforms and regardless of HD or 4K quality. It costs $19.99 to rent Resident Evil, allowing you to watch it within 48 hours after pressing play. It is $24.99 to purchase the movie and own it forever on digital. With a runtime of 1 hour and 34 minutes, Resident Evil can easily be watched in a single night at home on digital. Anyone who still wishes to experience the movie on the big screen can continue doing so, even after Resident Evil was removed from hundreds of theaters. It should continue to be available in select theaters up until its official streaming debut. When Will Zach Cregger's Movie Be Available On Netflix? Image credit: Sony Pictures Releasing / Courtesy Everett Collection As a Sony Pictures Entertainment movie, Resident Evil is confirmed to call Netflix it's first streaming home. The two studios have been working together for years, but they reached an agreement in early 2026 to extend the licensing deal that brings Sony movies to the streamer. The deal lasts through at least 2029 and makes Netflix the exclusive Pay-1 streaming home to Sony's feature films. While Resident Evil wasn't singled out in the announcement press release, it falls under the agreement. Sony's movies will only go to Netflix after they have a full theatrical and home entertainment release. This is also not limited to the United States, as the deal increasing the international reach, too. Resident Evil's Netflix release date has not been confirmed at this time, and it is not among Netflix's November 2026 releases. We can fairly accurately predict when it will come based on the terms of the deal and how Sony and Netflix have worked together before. Sony and Netflix have worked with shorter theatrical-to-streaming gaps in 2026 so far, with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and GOAT releasing on the streamer after 74 and 90 days, respectively. In 2025, a 120-day gap was most common. The same gap applied in this case gives Resident Evil a projected Netflix release date of early January 2027. There is a small chance Resident Evil could still come to Netflix before the year ends and slot in as part of the streamer's December releases based on Sony's 2026 movies. The Bone Temple went to Netflix 42 days after its digital release, while GOAT did so after 51 days. Either gap from digital to streaming would put Resident Evil on Netflix in December 2026. The determining factor may very well be whether Sony wants the Netflix release to come before or after Resident Evil's physical release. They've handled it both ways with 2026 movies already, and which side Cregger's blockbuster falls on will decide if it is a December 2026 or January 2027 release. The New Resident Evil Is Also Getting A 4K, Blu-ray & DVD Release The avenue you'll have to watch Resident Evil at home later on is with its physical release. Sony has confirmed that the film is coming to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Physical media collectors can buy Resident Evil in any of these formats starting on December 29, 2026. Resident Evil is currently available for pre-order in select formats. Amazon has the movie available to pre-order with price guarantees of no more than $36.99 for a 4K and digital physical copy, $29.99 for it on Blu-ray and digital, and $24.99 for DVD. There is also SteelBook option that includes the movie in 4K and digital, which is listed on Walmart for $44.99, but the preorder function is not live. Purchasing a physical copy of Resident Evil in 4K comes with Dolby Vision/HDR visuals and a Dolby Atmos audio track. No matter what version you get, there will be optional subtitles and special features. This includes an audio commentary from Cregger, and three featurettes. Those featurettes include "Game Change" about Cregger and his vision, "Flesh and Bone: Designing the Monsters" highlighting the work done by Legacy Creatures to make the zombies, and "Anatomy of a Scene: From Storyboard to Splatter" about the full process to make Jump Street and the elevator scene. It's worth noting that Resident Evil's special features are also available on all digital copies currently available. So to recap, Resident Evil is currently playing in select theaters and is available to watch digitally, while its physical release is confirmed for December 29, 2026, with its Netflix premiere expected sometime in December 2026 or January 2027.
