How to Train Your Dragon has had a number of full-blown video game releases over the years, but none that have quite lived up to its incredible movie adaptations. It is a shame, as while the books and films are generally targeted toward a younger audience, there is absolutely scope for a bigger and more fulfilling adventure game that forgoes the movie tie-in curse and releases to critical and commercial success. After all, this is a franchise with a cast of memorable and colorful characters, great art, and the potential for fun, heartfelt, and action-packed narratives. Fortunately, while fans may not be able to play a great licensed HTTYD game as they await the release of the next How to Train Your Dragon film, they can experience this massive new RPG that blends the best elements of its adventure-filled shenanigans with The Legend of Zelda's unique approach to exploration and quest design. This new title may just be the game that finally does How to Train Your Dragon justice, or at least serves as a fun proof of concept, even if it isn't an official release. This New RPG Lets You Train Your Own Dragon A game inspired by How to Train Your Dragon needs both a bevy of dragons for players to ride upon, and the ability to tame said dragons and build a meaningful bond with them. That's a hard goal to accomplish, as, typically, games centered around riding a dragon (of which there are far too few) only let you use them as a means of destruction. Crimson Desert's controversial implementation is a good example of this, as it puts its powerful dragons behind a timer, ostensibly turning them into a temporary powerful ability akin to the Greymane's many other skills. Fortunately, Sagas of Lumin, the debut title from developer Elos Games And Arts, seeks to rectify that mistake, at least to an extent, by delivering a game in which players can capture and tame their own dragons before riding them into battle. Its Steam store page showcases the ability to pet your dragon, of which there seems to be several different types, as well as ride on its back and utilize it to burn down enemy ships and conquer the battlefield. Sure, it may not be quite as family-friendly as How to Train Your Dragon, but, at least from the available gameplay footage we can see, it absolutely captures the fantastical nature of its whimsical world, as well as the explosive action that's so beautifully animated in those original films. What may intrigue fans even more is how Sagas of Lumin is aiming to be a game like The Legend of Zelda, in large part thanks to its approach to exploration. The Zelda Vibes Are Strong It is clear that, at least to some extent, Sagas of Lumin is inspired by the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and even earlier entries like Skyward Sword. Its floating islands, grandiose crumbling castles and churches, floating sky ships, ancient technology, and vast open areas that can be explored freely would all be right at home in a recent Zelda title. That, of course, isn't to diminish the hard work or originality of Sagas of Lumin, as it is very much its own unique experience. Rather, it can be helpful to have a point of reference, and Sagas of Lumin's semi-open-world exploration, with its third-person combat on the ground and dragon-riding chaos while in the air, absolutely seems akin to Nintendo's latest Zelda outings. That combination of Zelda and How to Train Your Dragon is really what is setting Sagas of Lumin apart and what makes it stand out as an experience worth getting hyped about. It also helps that it reminds me a lot of the criminally underrated PS3 classic, Lair, which is absolutely deserving of a remake. Sagas of Lumin will be launching on 5 February 2027, so there isn't too long to wait. It is releasing into Early Access on Steam, with the initial launch containing what appears to be a substantial amount of content. For those interested, the developer is planning on hosting Beta tests in the coming months, which should give prospective fans a chance to see whether it lives up to the hype. Regardless, it's great to finally get a game akin to How to Train Your Dragon that may finally push Dreamworks to release a proper game in the franchise.
