Her first fiction offering couldn’t be more different – it’s dark, funny and twisted. It was an instant hit when it came out, selling over 1.2 million copies. Mackie has been compared to Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn and Oyinkan Braithwaite. Netflix commissioned an adaptation of the book in 2024 with Anya Taylor-Joy playing the lead role of Grace Bernard, a psychopath. Grace is languishing in Limehouse prison for murder – and even though she claims she isn’t responsible for that particular death, there are six other people – all members of her extended family – that she did kill, but didn’t get caught for. So you could say that karma has caught up with her. But she’s not taking her jail time lying down and is appealing the decision. All six deaths she was responsible for were made to look like accidents, and with years of planning and a large dose of luck, she somehow got away with each one. Grace was the product of an affair between her young, beautiful mother, Marie and Simon Artemis, one of the richest men in the world. When Marie told married Simon she was pregnant, he made it clear he didn’t want to know. He didn’t want something as inconvenient as a baby with another woman to rock his marriage. Marie and her baby were left to fend for themselves and as a result, Grace grew up in poverty. Her first home was a tiny studio flat above a chicken shop and Marie worked all hours just to get by. In Grace’s mind, Simon and his family ruined her mum’s life, and in turn her own. Simon’s family knew about Grace’s existence but told their son not to offer any help or support because Marie was a ‘gold digger’. Marie died from cancer when Grace was 13 and her grief turned into bitterness with revenge as her only goal. For five years she worked out the logistics and by the time she was 18, she had a solid plan. Each death was planned with glee, beginning with her maternal grandparents. She justifies each of the deaths because for the most part, they were dreadful people. To help with the boredom of being incarcerated, Grace is writing about her crimes which offers insights into each of the murders she’s committed. Even though Grace is awful, I still loved her as a protagonist. I enjoyed her hateful observations on everyone and everything, and I found myself agreeing with many of them. Her observations about prison and particularly her cellmate Kelly are so funny – and if it weren’t for the psychopathic tendencies I imagine she could be a great friend and ally to have. The ending is very satisfying and unexpected which is always a bonus as often you can see the ‘twist’ a mile away. How to Kill Your Family is a very funny, skilfully plotted read – and if you haven’t already read it, now is your chance. Comment now
