If there's one thing that you absolutely need to know about Castlevania: Belmont's Curse, it's that it has an incredibly high difficulty curve that's up there with some of the series' toughest games. Belmont's Curse is so unbelievably tough that it might actually be enough to put some people off from experiencing what the brilliant game has to offer. Don't worry, though, as there's a workaround. Although Belmont's Curse doesn't have any specific difficulty level options, it does have a Custom Mode that lets you tweak several balance elements. To access it, simply pause the game, go into the settings menu, select Gameplay, and then tick the box that says "Enable Custom Mode". You can turn it on or off at any time, as you're not locked into it. Doing so will allow you to change adjust the difficulty of Belmont's Curse in many ways, although the game warns you against doing this since it may "negatively impact the gaming experience". It's not the way Evil Empire wanted you to play Belmont's Curse, but it does give you some control over how much you'll struggle against it. Custom Mode doesn't affect trophies and achievements, so don't worry about missing anything if you activate it. Damage Received From Enemies Lets you increase or decrease the amount of damage you take from enemy and boss attacks. Damage Received From Traps Lets you increase or decrease the amount of damage you take from environmental hazards. Experience Gained Lets you increase how much experience you earn by up to three times. While some of the options in Custom Mode can be used to make Belmont's Curse a complete cakewalk, there are some that are easy to recommend to all players. Respawning in front of boss doors is a big one, as the boss battles are incredibly tough and all have notable runbacks that can make them even more frustrating. Increasing the maximum number of potions is also a fair choice, as just three by default doesn't leave Rose with much room to heal early on in the game, at least until you've levelled her up. If you're struggling with either combat or platforming, then adjusting the damage of traps or enemies might be the way to go, or giving Rose a bit of an experience point boost to level her up quicker.
