How the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Post-Credits Scene Sets Up the Next Avengers Film

The newest Spidey sequel stars Tom Holland returning once again as New York’s friendly neighborhood superhero. While the movie is touted as a back-to-basics installment that sees Spider-Man squaring off against an earthbound enemy, the post-credits scene once again flings our favorite hero off-world to outer space. But where? And why?Because it’s Marvel we’re talking about here, you can guess what it probably means: a teaser for the upcoming Avengers crossover, Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Yes, Secret Wars. We don’t mean Avengers: Doomsday. While they don’t remember Peter (on account of Doctor Strange’s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home), Ned is still a Spider-Man fan. Early in the movie, Ned shows off his custom-built smartphone app that tracks Spider-Man’s movements across New York City. It’s basically just a GPS app for Spider-Man.So, in the movie’s post-credits “scene” (it’s hardly a scene, really), Ned’s tracker pings Spider-Man’s location way outside New York. How far away from New York? On a different planet. (New Jersey?! No, just kidding.) Ned’s app locates Spider-Man all the way on an uncharted, unnamed planet. And, well, that’s the scene.You probably already know that there’s another huge Marvel movie on the horizon: Avengers: Doomsday. Tom Holland is not confirmed to appear in the new movie. (At least, for now.) But if you know the comics, this actually makes sense. Because the next Avengers movie in 2027 is Avengers: Secret Wars, which maintains a critical place in Spider-Man lore.Sony Pictures EntertainmentCould the Venom symbiote make an appearance in Avengers: Secret Wars?In the original Marvel comic series Secret Wars, published in 1984, various Marvel heroes (including Spidey) are sent by the cosmic being called the Beyonder to a faraway alien planet: Battleworld. There, the many displaced Marvel heroes and villains are forced to, well, do battle, with the winner receiving their ultimate wish granted by the Beyonder.In the eighth issue of Secret Wars, Peter comes in contact with an inky black parasite called the symbiote. Yes, that symbiote. The Venom symbiote. Secret Wars #8 marked the comic book debut of the symbiote, with Peter first contracting it before his work rival Eddie Brock would come into contact and become Venom in issue 300 of The Amazing Spider-Man.As far as the MCU is concerned, the Brand New Day post-credits scene probably isn’t teasing anything for Doomsday, because it’s actually a teaser for Secret Wars. Ned’s tracker picked up Spider-Man’s signal on Battleworld (we’re guessing), which is where Peter might touch a certain gooey symbiote. Might it be the same one that Tom Hardy left behind in the credits scene of No Way Home a few years back? Could it tie into the loose threads left behind in Venom: The Last Dance? We’ll know eventually. Until then, don’t expect Peter to show up in Doomsday. Expect him to be back—in black—in 2027.
