The Bankipur bypoll has delivered a double first for the JSP and PK. It's the party's maiden poll win and Kishor's first electoral victory as a contestant, months after the two-year-old party bet big, but failed to win any seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly polls.Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj wrested Bankipur from the BJP, ending the Nitin Nabin family's 35-year hold over the constituency. PK defeated BJP's Neeraj Kumar Sinha and RJD's Rekha Kumari by a margin of 18953 votes."The 30-year gap has been filled in just 30 days," PK said after the results were announced on Monday.PK had walked in to face the world's largest party's bastion not with a decades-old organisation, caste machinery or a formidable cadre, but with a fledgling party that barely existed on the ground. Here's all about the campaign that took on the BJP's dominance in the heart of Patna, and broke it.First, a bit about the Bankipur seat. The Bankipur Assembly seat fell vacant after BJP national president Nitin Nabin resigned as MLA and was elevated to the Rajya Sabha. For the BJP, retaining the constituency was expected to be a formality long considered a safe seat. Nabin had represented the seat continuously for 20 years, succeeding his father, Navin Kishore Prasad Sinha, who held it for the previous 15. Together, the family turned Bankipur into one of the BJP's strongest fortresses in Bihar. The Bankipur bypoll had been a referendum on Prashant Kishor's political experiment and also for the BJP, as this is the first electoral test in the state after the BJP's Samrat Choudhary took over as the Chief Minister of Bihar, becoming the first CM of the state from the saffron party.The Bankipur verdict has proven that the routing of JSP in the 2025 poll didn't mean failure. The sprawling campaign structure of the JSP was downsized to a lean team of around 100 core staff members, supported by specialised units handling women voters, caste outreach, booth management and campaign analytics, according to reports.PK's JSP, which couldn't manage to win even a single seat in the 2025 Assembly elections, rather than relying on large rallies, opted for relentless personal outreach.According to India Today TV's Bihar Bureau Chief, Prashant Kishor had started campaigning in Bankipur nearly two months before the BJP and the RJD.Day after day, PK walked through Bankipur's narrow lanes, held meetings with residents over cups of tea, addressed neighbourhood gatherings, conducted padyatras late into the night and met voters in small ward-level interactions.Instead of promising grand welfare schemes, PK repeatedly steered conversations towards everyday civic concerns like waterlogging, crumbling roads, traffic congestion, education, employment and governance.The campaign of the JSP was designed with military precision. Youth volunteers occupied parks, tea stalls and Gandhi Maidan every morning. Women's teams knocked on doors through the afternoons. The constituency was divided into multiple operational zones with committees working at every level, while PK himself became the party's biggest campaigner, face and organisational glue, The India Express newspaper reported.Without a legacy network or traditional vote bank, the JSP attempted something rare in Bihar politics. It aimed at building an electoral organisation while simultaneously fighting an election.PK also launched scathing attacks on the NDA led by the BJP in Bihar. The 49-year-old accused the BJP of distributing cash on polling day.HOW BJP TRIED TO GAIN MOMENTUM IN BANKIPUR AFTER INITIAL JOLTThe BJP initially appeared confident that its 35-year grip over Bankipur would comfortably win the bypoll. It first fielded Abhishek Kumar Sinha, popularly known as Bunty, before replacing him with 32-year-old party's youth wing leader Neeraj Kumar Sinha after controversy surrounding the family of the former.The candidate switch first exposed the BJP's growing unease as Kishor's campaign gathered momentum.What followed was an extraordinary mobilisation attempt by the BJP.Nitin Nabin, who had remained relatively low-profile in the early phase of the campaign, stepped in personally.Alongside Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, he led roadshows across Patna and spent the final day of campaigning visiting prominent temples before meeting booth-level workers, ward councillors, youth leaders and women's wing members to fine-tune voter mobilisation.The BJP also unleashed an army of nearly 40-star campaigners, including Union ministers, state ministers, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Chirag Paswan, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Manoj Tiwari, Ravi Kishan and several community leaders tasked with consolidating key caste blocs.The NDA campaign also saw former CM Nitish Kumar join the campaign and make an appeal to voters through a video.
