How Arsenal’s last 7 transfers from Chelsea turned out as they don’t sign star from rivals for first summer since 2022

ARSENAL have spent approaching £200million on players this summer but for once, none of them have come from Chelsea. There has been a flow of players between the two clubs with the majority heading from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates. RAHEEM STERLING Loan, 2024 Chelsea signed Sterling from Manchester City for £47.5million in 2022 and after failing to make an impact, moved to Arsenal in a one-year loan deal.It was a total disaster. He made just 17 Premier League appearances and only seven of those were starts. He scored one goal in 28 appearances in all competitions and was generally completely off the pace. After 163 appearances for Chelsea where he won four major honours, Kepa made the switch to Arsenal to provide competition for fellow Spaniard David Raya. Yet Mikel Arteta’s decision to play him in the Carabao Cup final, after playing in the earlier rounds, backfired. He failed to take Rayan Cherki’s cross, deflecting it straight into the path of Nico O’Reilly, and City won the game 2-0. Arsenal have now signed Illan Meslier on a free transfer from Leeds. MISS NONI MADUEKE £48.5million, 2025. He spent two years at Chelsea after signing from PSV Eindhoven for £29m in 2023 and failed to really establish himself. Madueke’s switch to Arsenal was not a popular one and some fans, unfairly, organised a petition – #NOTOMADUEKE – for the club to send him back to West London. He made 27 starts for Arsenal last term, 16 in the Premier League, and also scored eight goals. So it would be wrong to say the transfer has worked, but equally, he must do a lot more. He will get some chances this season on the left due to the departures of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard. JURY IS OUT KAI HAVERTZ £65million, 2023. Havertz thrived under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea and wrote his name into club history with the winning goal in the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City. Once Graham Potter took over at Stamford Bridge, Havertz struggled in a system that no longer suited him. Under Arteta, he has rediscovered his rhythm and consistency when he has been fit. And this has been the big problem. This is why during last season, Viktor Gyokeres was often preferred. Yet Havertz finished the season in the starting XI and has started both games this term. Arsenal are a better team when Havertz starts. HIT DAVID LUIZ £8m, 2019. He was a Premier League winner with Chelsea in 2016/17 but made the switch to Arsenal to play under Unai Emery after three years at Stamford Bridge. He was at Arsenal for a couple of years and made 49 Premier League starts and won the FA Cup under Arteta. Luiz delivered a strong performance in the 2020 final against former club Chelsea. Yet he was also incredibly inconsistent, picked up some red cards, and left on a free transfer. Arsenal fans were not sorry to see him go. MISS JORGINHO £12million, 2023. Arrived in the January transfer window after four-and-a-half years at Chelsea. He was a key man in Tuchel’s Chelsea team as the Blues lifted both the Champions League and the European Super Cup in 2021. Added some experience and quality in midfield and on his day, an outstanding player and also a good leader off the pitch. Equally, he did spend quite a lot of time on the sub’s bench so was a 7/10. He left on a free transfer in June 2025. HIT (just) WILLIAN Free transfer, 2020. Enjoyed seven excellent years at Chelsea where he remains incredibly popular. At Arsenal, he was a terrible signing. He managed just one goal in 37 appearances and ripped up his contract, with two years to run, to join Corinthians back in Brazil. He said: “Unfortunately, my time at Arsenal was not good, I wasn’t happy at the club.” MISS Comment now
