Houston Indian diaspora marks India's 80th Independence Day with fervour

Houston's Indian diaspora joined the Consulate General of India for flag hoisting and cultural celebrations. The event highlighted their enduring bond with India and support for the Viksit Bharat vision.The Indian diaspora in Houston celebrated India’s 80th Independence Day with enthusiasm and patriotic fervour, joining the Consulate General of India for a flag-hoisting ceremony at the Chancery premises. The area was decorated with marigold garlands and tricolour bunting as members of the community gathered in large numbers for the event.The celebrations included patriotic songs, an exhibition of specially commissioned paintings on the theme of \"Viksit Bharat\", and the felicitation of winners of the \"Bharat Ko Janiye\" Quiz. A number of elected officials and civic leaders also attended to present proclamations and greetings, while a second community ceremony later took place at India House Houston.Despite the Houston heat, members of the diaspora reached the Consulate early in the morning. The programme began with the national song Vande Mataram, sung in unison by the gathering. This was followed by the hoisting of the national flag amid a shower of flower petals and a mass rendition of the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana.Hoisting the Tricolour, Consul General D C Manjunath read out President Droupadi Murmu’s address, delivered on the eve of the milestone. He thanked those present for their steadfast commitment to India and urged them to actively engage in the country’s journey towards \"Viksit Bharat\". Many attendees said the ceremony strengthened their bond with India, despite being thousands of miles away. Those present included University of Houston Chancellor Renu Khator, Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong, Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones, Fort Bend Commissioner Dexter McCoy, Sugar Land City Council Member Sanjay Singhal, Regional Director for US Senator John Cornyn Jay Guerrero, and judges Juli Mathew and Surendran Pattel. Representatives of Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, Fort Bend Commissioner Andy Myers, and Houston Mayor John Whitmire also attended the event.After the Chancery programme, Manjunath joined community leaders and members of the diaspora at the O P Jindal Center at India House Houston for an outdoor ceremony. The event featured a four-flag hoisting sequence comprising the Indian Tricolour, the US National Flag, the Texas State Flag and the India House banner. The day ended with patriotic songs, cultural presentations, community speeches and a reception, marking the celebrations across Houston’s Indian-American community.
