Horse racing tips: ‘He won this race last year and is back with the ideal man in the saddle’ – Templegate’s Ascot NAP

TEMPLEGATE’S tips for a brilliant Saturday’s racing – headlined by the Shergar Cup at Ascot – are below. Back a horse by clicking their odds. NIGHT BREEZE (2.45 Ascot, nap) Can cause a storm in the Shergar Cup Challenge. Ian Williams’ six-year-old took this race 12 months ago and is back with the ideal man in the saddle — in-form Dylan Browne McMonagle. He has hardly put a foot wrong this season and got his head in front at Epsom back in April. Since then he has gone close again at the Derby meeting there before running another cracker when placed in the Old Newton Cup which was rerouted to Newmarket from its Haydock home this season. Williams then had a crack at 10 furlongs with this son of Derby winner New Approach and that saw him put in another tremendous effort at Glorious Goodwood 11 days ago. As you might expect he was doing all his best work at the finish of that shorter trip and was gaining on smart winner Al Aali in a hot handicap.Back over his ideal distance with an ideal pilot in the saddle, he can swoop late and give the home fans plenty to cheer about. SHRIMP SHADY (2.10 Ascot, nb) The one to beat after another determined success at Newbury where he landed his third win from his last five starts. He continues to progress despite creeping higher in the weights and sees out this trip really strongly. Ryan Moore is an eye-catching booking and he should have the edge over his less Ascot experienced rivals. Everything points towards a bold bid. HOSEKI (3.55 Ascot, treble) Can keep her unbeaten handicap record intact after showing real grit to get up in the final stride here last time. She’s improving with every run, this longer trip promises even more and William Haggas looks to have another smart staying filly on his hands. Templegte’s TV verdicts ASCOT Most read in Horse Racing 1.35 ALL WAYS GLAMOROUS can complete the hat-trick after looking better than ever when making all here last time, and this thriving five-year-old has proved he relishes a fast 5f. It’s tricky for an overseas rider but in a sprint you just point and shoot. Another bold front-running display could take plenty of catching. Kendall Roy rates the chief threat after going close in a hot Cork handicap, having already landed a Listed contest this summer and showing he remains right at the top of his game despite a high mark. Tuco Salamanca is easy to forgive for his Goodwood defeat after trouble in running although he’s probably better on the sand. Bolo Neighs finished behind the selection at Ascot but didn’t get the breaks and came home strongly. He’ll be finishing with a rattle. 2.10 THE real SHRIMP SHADY can stand up in the £85,000 Shergar Cup Stayers’. Andrew Balding’s improving four-year-old battled well to score over this trip at Newbury last time and will enjoy the fast ground. Ryan Moore is a massive plus in the saddle in a race that could get tactical. Mountain Road returned to winning form at Thirsk when stepped back up to two miles and looked revitalised by the change in trip. Tote Placepot tips By TEMPLEGATE (Steve Mullen) THE Placepot is a bet where you select a horse to be placed in the FIRST SIX races of any meeting. You can pick more than one horse in a race – you just multiply the number of selections in each race to calculate your stake. So for staking it’s 2x2x1x2x2x2 which adds up to 32 lines. You can stake what you want upwards from 5p a line which would cost a total of £1.60. 10p a line is £3.20 and so on. Provided at least one in each race is placed, we get a payout! Templegate’s Tote Placepot tips for Ascot LEG 1 All Ways Glamorous, Bolo NeighsLEG 2 Shrimp Shady, HermeticLEG 3 Night BreezeLEG 4 Red Spells Danger, Thunder CallLEG 5 Hoseki, Archers BayLEG 6 Ozat, Bullet Point That was his first success for Jim Goldie and there could still be more to come if he builds on it. Hermetic continues to hint he is capable of winning a race from this sort of handicap mark and shaped well when fourth in the Northumberland Vase While reserve Beylerbeyi would be a massive danger if getting a run. 2.45 NIGHT BREEZE can blow them away after another cracking effort at Goodwood and this tough, consistent six-year-old loves it here. He stays and looks ready to cash in again from a fair mark. Insanity is a big danger if shrugging off a rare flop over C&D as he had been very consistent and a strongly-run race should suit his hold-up style. Castle Stuart has been mixing it in red-hot handicaps at York and another honest display looks on the cards if he sees out this longer trip. Stem finally got his head back in front at Sandown and did it with a bit to spare, suggesting this return to a staying distance could unlock more improvement. Ryan Moore rides Asgard’s Captain who is dropping to his best trip. 3.20 RED SPELLS DANGER can land this after another rock-solid effort in a hot York handicap and he’s not run a bad race all season. He handles quick ground, is still improving and this looks a great chance to get back on the scoresheet. Thunder Call is the obvious danger after finishing just ahead of the selection at Newmarket and he remains open to progress, although 7f would be ideal. May Angel has been running well in strong company without quite getting his head in front and he’s had a little help from the handicapper. American Gulf is the unknown quantity after a long absence but showed plenty of ability last season and returns gelded so could make an impact, while Cape Ashizuri is better than we saw at York latest. 3.55 HOSEKI can keep her unbeaten handicap record intact after showing real grit to get up in the final stride here last time. She’s improving with every run, this longer trip promises even more and William Haggas looks to have another smart staying filly on his hands. Archers Bay is a major threat after enduring a rough passage at Newmarket and never getting the gaps. Ryan Moore takes over. Blue Hercules almost caused a surprise over course and distance last month, sticking on gamely despite pulling early and another bold front-running effort looks likely. Pierre Grosse has been knocking on the door in Ireland and this return to a handicap off a workable mark could see him step forward again. Level Look is another with untapped potential after finishing strongly from an impossible position at Chester. 4.30 OZAT is worth another chance with Ryan Moore taking over after suffering a nightmare at Goodwood where he never saw daylight when travelling strongly. A clear run this time could make all the difference and his mark looks workable. Cerulean Bay is in terrific nick after a cracking effort in a Goodwood handicap and he’s sure to be on the premises again if reproducing that level. Crown Board has returned from his break better than ever, going close over C&D last time, and another bold bid looks inevitable despite a career-high mark. Two Tribes is easy to forgive after stumbling badly leaving the stalls at Goodwood, with his excellent Ascot second the run to judge him on. Bullet Point was second in last year’s Hunt Cup so trip and track are ideal in first-time cheekpieces. NEWMARKET 1.55 GRACEFUL SONG can make the leap straight into Group 3 company after looking a star in the making on debut over this course and distance, travelling like a smart filly before putting the race to bed with plenty in hand. Charlie Appleby won this race last year and this exciting Dubawi filly looks capable of following suit. Nuit d’Eclair is the obvious danger after finishing a close fourth in the Princess Margaret, shaping as though there was plenty more to come. This extra furlong could unlock further improvement if she stays, which she should. Martinet looked a different proposition when bolting up at Thirsk, quickening clear in style and her top pedigree suggests she’s only just scratching the surface. Harlequin Sky has already mixed it with some of the best juvenile fillies around, was unlucky not to finish closer at Ascot after meeting trouble late and this step up to 7f promises to bring out even more. HAYDOCK 2.25 SALLAAL can continue Roger Varian’s fantastic run of form after looking every inch a Group horse when cruising home in Listed company at Sandown. This son of Frankel travelled powerfully, quickened clear with authority and looks destined for even bigger prizes if maintaining his upward curve. Nahraan is the chief danger despite disappointing on his comeback, as he travelled far too freely after a long absence and still has the class to make his presence felt if settling better. Danger Bay has done little wrong all season and was desperately unlucky not to finish much closer in a red-hot York handicap, so another career-best effort could be on the way. Convergent is better than his latest display suggests after failing to settle in a tactical affair and has already shown this season he can mix it at Group level. Sea Scout returns from a lengthy absence and is entitled to need this after being gelded. 3.00 FALLEN ANGEL should really win this on a fair drop in class. She found 1m2f a bit too far on her return in the Middleton and Karl Burke has given her a break since that May run. This drop back in trip looks ideal for a mare with five Group 1 victories to her name. Back against her own sex, she sets a daunting standard. Alobayyah is the obvious danger after showing a terrific attitude to land a huge Ascot handicap and she’s still improving, so this rise into Listed company may not stop her. Rumba Numba arrives on the up after just taking a competitive Goodwood handicap and Roger Varian’s filly is progressing with racing, making her an each-way contender. Pacific Mission has held her own in Pattern company before and shaped much better at Epsom last time, so she can’t be dismissed if building on that. Calendar Girl is worth a market check after 10 months off. She was last seen landing a Group 3 over 7f as a juvenile and has lots of scope for more.
