TEMPLEGATE takes on a belting day one of Glorious Goodwood confident of getting Sun Racing readers off to a flyer. The Gold Cup rematch between Scandinavia and Trawlerman is the big race and will be shown live on ITV1. Follow our man in on any of his selections simply by clicking their odds below. AL AALI (1.50 Goodwood, nap) He announced himself as a handicapper to follow with an impressive Newmarket success last time out. First-time blinkers gave him a boost as he travelled powerfully before quickening clear like a horse well ahead of his mark. The headgear stays on, William Buick takes the ride and, despite a 5lb rise, he looks to have plenty in hand judged on the level of his early form across the Channel which saw him run midfield in the French Derby. This stronger contest demands more but he’s progressing and likes quick ground. SCANDINAVIA (3.35 Goodwood, nb) He has become the No1 stayer in training after winning six big races on the trot including this race last year, the St Leger and this season’s Ascot Gold Cup. That latest victory came in a thrilling finish with Trawlerman, where he showed great heart to fight off his main rival. We know he likes this trip, handles the track and goes on fast ground. As a four-year-old it’s highly likely he hasn’t reached his peak yet. AL HUDAIBA (2.25 Goodwood, treble) He created a good impression when winning the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket 17 days ago despite running about all over the place. He showed good pace to chin the well-touted Ballydoyle hope Abraham Lincoln on the line and saw out the 7f well. Charlie Appleby wisely puts blinkers on today which should help keep him on an even keel as there is a lot of talent there. William Buick knows him well and the pair can defy the 3lb penalty. Templegate’s verdicts Most read in Horse Racing GOODWOOD 1.50 AL AALI announced himself as a handicapper to follow with an impressive Newmarket success last time out. Noble Horizon is a threat after demolishing his rivals at Leicester. The handicapper reacted with a hefty 10lb rise but he’s a lightly-raced four-year-old with an excellent pedigree. Irish challenger Diego El Queso has been consistent this season, winning well before another cracking second at Leopardstown. He travels strongly and should enjoy the likely fast pace. Quai De Bethune was almost knocked over in John Smith’s Cup at York last time and he’s another with plenty of upside. Yabher flopped in that race but had earlier scooted in by six lengths over this C&D and could easily bounce back for William Haggas despite a 10lb rise. Liberty Lane has a Listed win around here on his CV and shaped much more encouragingly at Sandown after a quiet start to the campaign. Rathgar arrives on the back of another solid Sandown effort and is one of several in the each-way picture. 2.25 AL HUDAIBA created a good impression when winning the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket 17 days ago despite running about all over the place. Haffner rates the biggest threat after taking a sizeable step forward when landing his Newmarket maiden. Aidan O’Brien’s Justify colt looked every inch a Pattern performer that day and is bred to keep progressing, so it’s no surprise he’s been pitched straight into Group company. Pikachu was only just over a length behind Al Hudaiba in the Superlative and is 3lb better off at the weights, although he may need another step forward to reverse that form and doesn’t look quite so progressive. Dr Rascal also arrives unbeaten after a polished Ascot success, where he showed a smart turn of foot before pulling clear. This is a sharp hike in class but he’s not out of the podium picture. Undiscovered has done everything asked in two Salisbury novice wins and is another with plenty more to come and he enjoyed decent ground last time. Ruler’s Control shaped with real promise when fourth in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot and the step up to this distance. The way he’s been plundering big prizes this season you don’t overlook a Joseph O’Brien runner but he will need a fair step forward. 3.00 QIRAT can go from the front to take the £200,000 Lennox Stakes. Ralph Beckett’s five-year-old has won all three starts at this specialists’ track where pace-pushers can prosper. He was good enough to take the Group 1 Sussex Stakes last season and warmed up nicely by winning at York last time. Last year’s second Lake Forest can fill the same spot again. He is a high-class performer who shaped well when staying on for fifth in the Jubilee Stakes over an inadequate 6f at Royal Ascot. That came on the back of an emphatic Listed success at Haydock on comeback. He was a good second in this race last year and has every chance of going one better. Marvelman comes from in-form Andrew Balding with every chance. He was a Group 2 winner at Doncaster the last time he tackled this trip in September. He quickly left a disappointing Saudi run behind when second in the Chipchase at Newcastle on his return. The step back up to 7f is ideal and he has the class to play a leading role. 3.35 SCANDINAVIA can win the rematch with Trawlerman in the Goodwood Cup. There was only a neck between them when the Aidan O’Brien superstar took the Ascot Gold Cup last time. But he showed a real liking for tricky Goodwood when winning this 12 months ago and can improve again. As a four-year-old it’s highly likely he hasn’t reached his peak yet. With proven Group 1 form, a perfect record this season and more to come he can get the better of old rival Trawlerman again — but there won’t be much in it. John & Thady Gosden’s legendary stayer Trawlerman is a credit to connections and ran very close to his best on his comeback as an eight-year-old when just touched off in the Ascot Gold Cup by Scandinavia. Last year brought Group 1 victories in the Gold Cup and Long Distance Cup at the highest level. He usually swerves this race but he did win a handicap over 1m6f at the 2022 Glorious meeting so the track shouldn’t be a major issue. He has developed an eye problem that means he has to wear special goggles in the parade ring but it didn’t seem to bother him at Ascot last time and he’ll be right there again. It should be a good battle for third too with Rahiebb, Lazy Griff and Amiloc all capable. 4.10 RUN BOY RUN was a good fourth in last year’s Stewards’ Cup here and is effectively off the same mark thanks to Toby Moore’s 7lb claim. He was in good form at Ascot last time when going close over 5f after finishing off strongly. Hopefully Ryan Moore’s son can show some of his old man’s composure in the saddle. Course specialist Lexington Blitz commands respect after an impressive C&D success in May before running a cracker in the Epsom Dash despite a slightly iffy draw. He’ll be up with the pace and should last home better than most. Twilight Calls has rolled back the years this summer, winning twice in his last three and coming from well off the pace to score at Newmarket last time. He still looks on a fair mark and another strongly-run race will be ideal. Naana’s Sparkle has improved since moving yards, winning twice from three starts and should be the shake-up again after a good run at Southwell. Vintage Clarets has slipped to an attractive mark and likes a quirky track like this. Glamorous Breeze is also worth a look after another excellent effort at Ascot, while Rapper’s Delight went close at Newmarket and should break his handicap duck before too long. Tatterstall won this race two years ago and is just 2lb higher in the weights today. He is another with each-way claims. Adrestia didn’t fire at Ascot last time but the booking of Oisin Murphy takes the eye and she went close in this race last year under the champion jockey who hasn’t been on board since. 4.45 LAUNCH SEQUENCE should really be coming here after a debut win at Doncaster last time. The Karl Burke-trained Mehmas colt was hampered several times before finishing powering home into third. Of course there’s a chance that will happen again at tricky Goodwood but James Doyle takes over today and will hopefully plot a wiser course. The chief danger is ownermate Final Objective, who sets the standard on form after finishing just a length and a half behind the winner in the Group 2 Coventry at Royal Ascot. He improved a bundle from his debut and has been gelded since which could see him take another step forward, although the Doyler has chosen Launch Sequence. Dorigo ran well at Royal Ascot, finishing seventh in the Windsor Castle after showing plenty of speed on the far side. He looks capable of another step forward. Agrippa has gone close on both starts, most recently beaten only a neck at Newbury, and is another with obvious claims if continuing his progression. Savage Mariner is better judged on his Leicester debut second than his Royal Ascot effort over an inadequate 5f. 5.20 ANNASTARZY can bring up the four-timer for Richard Hannon. She followed wins at Thirsk and over this course and distance with an impressive success at Newbury where she travelled strongly before flying home with plenty in hand. A 10lb rise means she’ll need to keep improving but her form has been franked and there should be more to come. Crazee Icon also arrives chasing a hat-trick after back-to-back wins at Chester. She has looked better with each start, handled quicker ground well last time and is another progressive filly who should be competitive stepping up in class. Rumba Numba shaped with plenty of promise when fifth in the Kensington Palace at Royal Ascot, staying on well in that hot contest. She has had just two handicap starts and there should be more to come. Nanino Niyati has made a bright start for Owen Burrows, winning at Newbury before finishing a close fourth at Ascot despite a higher mark. She is consistent and should come home with a late rattle. Proposal is worth another chance after her handicap debut at Windsor, where a slow start and greenness left her with too much to do. Wid made a successful return to a mile at Carlisle and looks the type to improve further now switched into handicaps, while Song N Dance is better judged on her earlier Ascot second than her latest run over an inadequate 7f. 5.55 MACHADADORP caught the eye with a cracking second on handicap debut at Newmarket 17 days ago. She travelled strongly before finding only one too good over 7f and dropping to what should be a strongly-run 6f should be ideal with that outing under her belt. She can add to the Oisin Murphy-Andrew Balding winning machine. Bintaryana is a major danger after a deserved York success where she was value for more than the neck margin. The handicapper has taken a bit of a chance with a paltry 2lb rise and there’s definitely more to come. Zen Diva has won both starts this season, the latest by a wide margin at Salisbury, albeit in a small field. She is improving quickly and has the profile of a filly who can cope with this higher grade. Stormy Impact has been holding her own in strong handicaps, notably when fourth in the Epsom Dash before another solid effort at Chester. A strong pace should play to her strengths if things fall right. Secret History has won three of her last four and did well to score despite pulling hard at Newmarket last time. This stronger gallop may suit, while Sing The Blues looked better than ever when winning her first handicap at Newmarket latest and is another with scope to progress. Cinque Verde returns to handicap company after finding Listed class too demanding last time.
