Horrified Coronation Street star reveals family home was targeted by thief – as neighbours helped to track him down

Coronation Street star Ben Price has revealed he was the victim of a real-life crime drama after a suspected thief prowled his street checking cars and entering gardens before stopping outside his family home. The actor, 54, said police were called in after his fellow residents in Bath, Somerset launched their own CCTV hunt, pooling footage from Ring doorbells and security cameras to track the man’s movements through the neighbourhood. Ben added he believes the man has since been caught. The incident happened last week after a message went out on the local residents’ group warning that a car had been broken into. Sign up for the Coronation Street newsletter Thank you! Ben said: “Someone pipes up. Missing cat. Car broken into. Everybody’s at the window. “They managed to put all this camera [footage] together. Someone did a brilliant editing job and followed this person down the street. “But before it, all the way up the road, [he] checked every car. They went in some people’s gardens. “They cut every Ring doorbell bit of footage together in one big film.” Ben, who plays Nick Tilsley in the ITV soap, said the suspected thief then made his way towards his own home, where he lives with wife Alexandra and their teenage children, Paloma and Max. Speaking on the On The Sofa podcast with Corrie co-stars Jack and Colson this week, he said: “Then they start to go down our road. I think the camera footage [showed] he stopped by ours. I think they caught him.” The footage was handed over to police as residents worked together to build up a picture of the man’s movements. Ben said: “Someone went, ‘Oh, don’t worry. I’ll get the footage together. I’ll put it together.’ They put it in a group in a little movie. “I was like, ‘Oh, this one’s impressive.’ Someone went, ‘Oh, don’t worry. I might do some credits.'” His podcast co-host and former Corrie co-star Colson Smith joked the film needed a David Attenborough-style voiceover. Ben played along, saying in the national treasure’s famous voice: “He’s coming away empty-handed with just a bike pump and a sat-nav.” Despite the scare, Ben said nothing had been taken from his own car. He said: “To be fair, there’s nothing in the cars anyway.” The crime prompted him to recall a separate occasion when his car and motorbike were stolen. Ben said: “I was really gutted. I don’t really give a stuff about cars, but I was really gutted about my motorbike.” Ben has played Nick in Coronation Street since 2009, taking over the role previously played by Adam Rickitt.
