Sign in to your ScreenRant account Whether it managed to get its hooks into you personally or not, Hogwarts Legacy is factually one of the most successful games of the current generation. The last count had it selling more than 40 million copies across all platforms, a total that only the very biggest games in the genre can beat, and one that very few debuts ever manage to hit. As such, it was no surprise at all to hear that a sequel had been ordered, with development on that now underway at Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Studios. Though the game hasn't seen a full reveal just yet, we can actually glean a fair bit about what it is going to be like from the other major upcoming project tied to the Harry Potter franchise. Unless you've been living under a particularly large rock, you are likely already aware of the upcoming HBO adaptation of the original Harry Potter series. The first season of that is already in the can, with a scheduled release date of December 25, giving fans a chance to see if they have lived up to the movies that defined many of their childhoods. One of the unique selling points of the show, that they use to counter-arguments about the new series not really being necessary, is that the episodic format gives them the opportunity to follow the books more closely. That should lead to more accurate settings and characters, many of whom won't have been in the films at all. So how does all this relate to Hogwarts Legacy 2? Well, those in charge of the franchise have made it clear that the next game in the series will be following the themes of the show closely. That likely means that a lot of the stuff we have seen in the various trailers and videos so far give us a reasonable representation of what the next game will be like. The latest trailer from the show promises to fans that they are going to be seeing a lot more of the muggle world than ever before. That could prove to be a fascinating additional facet of the next game, after a major point of criticism for the first saw players point out how limited the open-world was at times. Having an alternate open-world for players to explore, beyond the realms of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, could be a really exciting way to add variety to the next release. All of that said, it largely depends on exactly what the story of the sequel is going to be. We know it's going to tie closely to the show, but if it's a one-to-one translation then it could be difficult to justify a narrative reason for leaving the castle and its immediate environs. It's also a huge risk to make Hogwarts Legacy 2 a direct translation of Harry Potter's story in its own right, considering how much the first game was lauded for bringing us an original story within the same magical universe.
