Himalayan 'SOS': Nepal floods put China's mountain build-up under scrutiny

India Today documents the scale at which China is carving through the fragile Himalayas with dams, tunnels, railways and high-altitude airfields.The glacial collapse that tore through Nepal’s borderlands may have originated on the Nepali side of the Himalayas. But that does not give China a clean chit for the scars its infrastructure push is leaving across the same fragile mountain system.Last year, the Stockholm Center, a Sweden-based think tank, warned that the Tibetan Plateau was undergoing a rapid but largely overlooked ecological transformation. India Today’s Open-Source Intelligence team reported the warning from COP30 and mapped China’s expanding infrastructure across the plateau. It drew little attention.The Nepal floods have brought that warning back into focus.So, India Today’s OSINT team widened the lens and traced at least 90 Chinese infrastructure assets across the Himalayan belt in the Tibet Autonomous Region: 27 air assets, 17 railway assets, 33 mountain tunnels, and 13 dams, reservoirs, and hydropower projects, using publicly available information and official records. The review prioritised projects showing visible post-2020 activity — newly built, expanded, operational or under construction. Together, they trace an infrastructure arc from the Karakoram near Ladakh to the eastern Himalayas facing Arunachal Pradesh.For years, researchers have warned that blasting, tunnelling, excavation and slope-cutting can compound instability in mountains already being reshaped by rising temperatures, retreating glaciers and thawing permafrost.Building in thin air At least 13 of the 27 Chinese air assets identified by India Today sit above 4,000 metres: Aksai Chin (4,876m), Jiareke (4,612m), Rutog (4,549m), Daklam/Kangmar (4,437m), Cona (4,366m), Tingri (4,306m), Damxung (4,302m), Nyikogli/Shiquanhe (4,290m), Burang (4,288m), Nagadong (4,276m), Ngari Gunsa (4,270m), Demchok East (4,258m), and Khunjerab Post (4,122m) More than half of the air facilities mapped by India Today sit above 4,000 metres. The Aksai Chin heliport is at approximately 4,876 metres, while Jiareke and Rutog lie above 4,500 metres, aviation infrastructure carved into terrain defined by thin air, severe cold and unstable slopes.Their functions vary. Ngari Gunsa, Lhasa Gonggar and Nyingchi Mainling are dual-use airports, combining civilian connectivity with potential military logistics, surveillance and combat roles.The expansion accelerated after 2020: 14 of the 27 air assets were upgraded, expanded or became operational during this period. In July 2021, defence and OSINT analyst Damien Symon tracked runways emerging at Burang and Tingri. Longzi later emerged with a 4,500-metre runway, entering service towards the end of 2022.Burang faces the Lipulekh region near the India-Nepal-China tri-junction; Tingri faces Nepal and the central Himalayas; Longzi sits near the Arunachal frontier.Engineering the rivers Nine of the 13 mapped dams, reservoirs and hydropower projects sit within the river system that ultimately flows into India as the Brahmaputra The water footprint is equally varied: six reservoirs, five hydropower stations and two major water-conservancy hubs, spread across the Sutlej basin, Karnali-Ghaghara headwaters, southern Shigatse and the Yarlung Tsangpo, which enters Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang before becoming the Brahmaputra.But Chinese dams are not proof of causation for Nepal’s disaster.A project hundreds of kilometres away cannot, by itself, explain a glacial collapse. The concern is cumulative: dams, blasting, tunnelling and slope-cutting unfolding across terrain already losing stability.China’s drive to reshape its rivers is older than the current construction boom. China’s founding communist leader, Mao Zedong famously said: “There is more water in the south and less water in the north. If possible, it is okay to borrow a little.” China has since built more than 80,000 dams and over 98,000 reservoirs, according to a 2025 CSIS(Center for Strategic and International Studies) report.The most consequential project now lies on the lower Yarlung Tsangpo near the Great Bend in Medog. Construction began in July 2025 on five cascade hydropower stations costing an estimated 1.2 trillion yuan. Here the river falls nearly 2,000 metres over just 50 kilometres, creating enormous hydropower potential, in one of the Himalayas’ deepest and most geologically unstable gorges.Boring through the mountains At least 17 Chinese rail assets across the Himalayan belt — 11 corridors and six railway/logistics nodes, linking existing backbones with new lines pushing deeper into Tibet Railways and tunnels reveal the same pattern of infrastructure moving deeper into difficult terrain. India Today mapped 17 rail assets: 11 corridors and six stations, freight yards or logistics nodes. Only the Lhasa-Shigatse and Lhasa-Nyingchi lines are operational backbones.Construction on the Bomi–Nyingchi stretch of the Sichuan–Tibet Railway began in 2021, with Chinese state media reporting dozens of active construction sites along the route. Farther east, work has also begun on the 134-km Bomi–Ranwu railway. What makes this line significant is the terrain it has to cross: more than four-fifths of the route will run over bridges or through tunnels, with nearly 95 km of tunnelling planned, according to Chinese government and railway documents. India Today mapped 33 mountain tunnels across the Himalayan belt — 21 road tunnels and 12 railway tunnels, showing how China is cutting through some of the region’s most difficult terrain The tunnel map explains what such expansion physically requires.For 30 tunnels whose lengths could be independently traced in state government and railway plans, the combined length is about roughly 370.5 km. Yigong alone stretches roughly 42.4 km; Layue, Zilashan, Guolashan and Haizishan run for around 30 km apiece.The wider 1,500-km long Sichuan-Tibet Railway has to cross more than 40 major fault lines, more than attempted by any previous rail project. Engineering studies of the Ya’an-Nyingchi section describe extreme ground stresses, unstable geology, geothermal heat and other hazards as defining challenges.And the ground itself is changing.A 2022 peer-reviewed study in Communications Earth & Environment, a Nature Portfolio journal, found that nearly 40 per cent of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau’s permafrost is already warm and unstable. As permafrost thaws, slopes weaken. Excavation, blasting, spoil dumping and reservoir loading can then add local stresses to terrain already in motion.Nepal’s disaster was not made in Medog.But it is a warning of what can happen when one of the world’s most aggressive infrastructure pushes meets one of the world’s fastest-changing mountain systems — with consequences that do not stop at China’s borders, but flow downstream towards India.- EndsPublished By: bidisha sahaPublished On: Sep 1, 2026 18:09 IST
