High Court allows inmate’s constitutional food suit

A Rastafarian man on remand who said prison meals have forced him to abandon his vegan diet and harmed his health will have his constitutional claim against the State heard by the High Court next year. Justice Michelle Weekes on Tuesday set a March 8 and 9 court date after the government lost its bid to have the judge throw out the case in the No. 8 Supreme Court . Inyah Iroyal Jones, who is on remand on a gun charge, is asking the court to allow him to maintain his vegan lifestyle while in prison. “This is a victory for Rastafarians… and people on ethical diets generally,” said his attorney Lalu Hanuman following the ruling. In the constitutional motion, Jones and his mother said his health had suffered “drastically” as a result of not being able to follow his vegan diet. Acting Solicitor General Marsha Lougheed appeared for the Attorney General and the Superintendent of Prisons. (EJ)
