High-capacity external drives hide a secret that makes shucking almost worth the risk

The process of shucking hard drives from pre-assembled external storage devices is a complicated one, as there's no guarantee the drive that's removed will be one worth the price of the enclosure. And while it could be viewed as a deal compared to the price of network-attached storage (NAS) and server-specific storage, it's usually seen as a gamble. That is until you reach a certain capacity threshold where it starts to become a necessity to shuck. Shucking can prove troublesome at lower capacities It's much more appealing at the higher end When shopping around for the first couple of drives for your network storage or home lab, it's easy to get swept up by the pricing of storage. Even 1TB and 2TB NAS or server-rated drives can be found at significantly higher prices than consumer-grade counterparts, but the current pricing crisis of storage and memory has certainly exacerbated this problem. It can be enticing to see an external enclosure with a hard drive available at a 10% discount, sometimes more. When picking a drive from an online storefront, you're able to pick a drive with a high enough workload rating, CMR, high spinning speed, and a good enough warranty. This comes at a premium, however, which is where shucking comes into play. Trading unknowns for a discount, it can be possible to grab a drive with similar desirable specifications at a reduced cost. An external enclosure only guarantees capacity and nothing else. It's what makes this such a gamble. The manufacturer of the enclosure and drive can swap out what's used inside the product without needing to change marketing or listings. The drive is purposely omitted from the specs sheet. Then there's the fact that shucking a drive out of the enclosure will void the warranty, so if the drive isn't desirable, it can prove difficult to return the product to the retailer. It may not be viewed as worthwhile to shave off $20 or so from the cost of a drive. But for higher-capacity models, the external enclosure discount can increase considerably. Drive capacity pricing isn't a smooth curve The price per GB (or TB) isn't linear when mapped on a chart. Hard drive pricing is usually segmented by family and sales. Higher-capacity NAS and server storage command higher prices due to enhanced warranties, better endurance, and other features that make them notably more appealing for home servers and networked storage. External desktop storage isn't sold to the same market and is instead marketed to consumers for backing up data. This usually lowers the MSRP. This can result in a price that could be viewed as dramatically cheaper, both in total cost and price per TB. For instance, looking at Amazon US right now at the time of writing, a 20TB Western Digital Red drive costs $820. A 20TB Western Digital Elements external storage solution costs $700; that's a full $120 saving. It doesn't really matter at that point to many who simply want to save as much as they can without sacrificing total capacity for storing data. While shucking is never a necessity, it becomes almost required to save the most on storage. Then there's availability. We're continuing to see stock issues with storage and memory, which can also help increase prices as storefronts attempt to increase margins and take advantage of demand. Fewer people may be purchasing external storage, which can lead to considerable savings. And if you're lucky, you'll end up with a white label drive that shares many of the same features that the $120 more expensive model would come with. But even without these features, that saving is still sometimes worth it. Safety all boils down to adequate testing Check before you shuck There's no guarantee a drive will run well for multiple years, be it an external enclosure with a white label drive or one purchased specifically for an advanced use case. Paying that extra $120 won't mean the drive will absolutely work as intended. There's always a risk an electronic device or component could prematurely fail. That said, using the RMA process with a failed drive under warranty would be much easier than a shucked drive. That's why one should check external storage before shucking. When shucking a drive, it's vital that the enclosure not be opened without testing it first. Connect it via USB, verify the reported capacity and SMART information, record serial numbers, run SMART tests, and perform some other read and write tests. This should all provide insight into whether the drive is worth shucking or returning. If something isn't quite right, send it back. A 20TB drive or another high-capacity storage medium will take some time, but it's well worth it when the savings are considered. And like any server, storage, or NAS, one should always back everything up. A regular backup strategy is the best form of defense against data loss. Shucking can make even more financial sense when purchasing multiple hard drives, especially high-capacity drives. Returning to that above 20TB example, picking up five of the Western Digital Reds would cost $4,100. Going with external enclosures for shucking, you'd save $580, which can be better spent elsewhere. Shucking will always be a risk Shucking was always considered a hack. To begin with, it was enthusiasts prowling sales like Prime Day to save as much as they could on hoarding storage and data at home. The process can risk damaging the enclosure too, as it can involve cracking open consumer products and hoping you've just won the hard-drive lottery. There is still an element of uncertainty, and anyone requiring guaranteed specifications or straightforward enterprise support should buy a standard drive, but for everyone willing to take the risk, you could well be pleasantly surprised.
